Reiff approached about pay cut
#31
Its a calculated risk to get a guy like Ngakoue who is a rare playmaker to acquire. Griffen's departure left a hole and Z knows he needs pressure to help out his young secondary. Mike Tice was quoted last week as saying he didn't think Reiff is a NFL LT and I totally agree. The Lions moved him to RT and then let him go. Hell, the Vikings tried hard to get Trent Williams so lets not cry any tears for Riley Reiff potentially being cut. But having said that its still risky: its a big change just before the season starts. Its disruptive potentially to some aspect. I'm not trying to say it will be a seamless transition. But the team isn't getting rid of Gary Zimmerman in his prime here.

I mean the franchise is trying to take the next step, not maintain status quo. The NFC is tough. You either are getting better or getting worse. I applaud the effort.

This season is going to be such a crapshoot anyhow, with the crazy off season and all. I think it might be the perfect time to cut Reiff loose, move O'Neill to LT and see what transpires. Will either be a good move or just another year of an inept OL.

Yes, as I was painfully reminded of when I looked over the depth chart of the team who knocked us out of the playoffs.

To a Super Bowl roster, they added Trent Williams to their line, Brandon Auyuk to go with Deebo Samuel, Javon Kinlaw to go with Nick Bosa, and Jordan Reed to pair with George Kittle. Jesus. If Reed stays healthy, how do you stop that? Not to mention they get Jalen Hurd and Jerrick McKinnon back.

They are loaded and with a big contract QB too...

Hats off to the 49'ers. I'd root for them before Seattle, GB or LA.

Pray half of them get COVID during the playoffs?

I think to beat them you have to cut off their head. Their biggest vulnerability is their QB. They're strong everywhere else. Not that Jimmy G is bad; he's not. But you're not going to stop their run game or score much against that defense. I'd put Jimmy just under Kirk in terms of talent, so you have to make that be the difference. Tall, towering order though.

Pffff....you don't need for them to get Covid.  You just need faulty test to say they have Covid.  I bet Tom Brady can bribe the ball boy somehow.

What could possibly go wrong with this plan?  Glad we’ve never had OLine trouble before and
that we feel confident in all the other players on the line.

What could go wrong?... we could miss watching Reiff get run over in pass pro. :#

Quote:If we miss the playoffs on the back of a broken OLine after
cutting our 2nd and 3rd best linemen and plugging in 3
nobodies … I feel like that would burn through all the rest of my good will and
might get me off sports for good.

A broken oline is sort of a permanent condition around here. I see losing Reiff and letting young, hungry guys play as addition by subtraction and finally getting a move on towards the future. Reiff has been an expensive band-aid since he was signed and I won't miss him.   I've been rooting for them to cut him and let the youth movement get in gear.

And frankly I don't care if they "miss the playoffs because omg Reilly Reiff" lol .  The team needs to stop the short-sighted thinking at oline (and with aging, underperforming vets in general) and build a line that can compete for real instead of with band-aids, scrubs, guys out of position, and guys who have no business being on the field.

I don't get this the 'season is in the toilet' angst if Reiff is cut. More fan overreaction. Or I'll say IMO.

Mike Zimmer just now on Riley Reiff: 'We'll just have to wait and see today, now won't we?'

LMAO. Z.....

Wolfson just said they'll know by midday his answer. Not at TCO so far.
