Quote: Today is the peak for daily deaths in the US, coronavirus model saysFrom CNN's Arman Azad
An influential coronavirus model cited by the White House said that today is the peak day for daily deaths in the United States. About 2,150 Covid-19 deaths are projected for today and deaths are expected to decline moving forward, according to model from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington. A total of 68,841 people are now expected to die in the US by August, which is up from Friday’s projection of 61,500 deaths. The model predicts the pandemic will peter out in May, but experts have questioned its assumption that there will be no resurgence of the virus in the summer months According to the model, the US hit “peak resource use” three days ago, on Friday. The latest update of the model says the US faced a shortage of 7,369 intensive care beds on that date, but it’s unclear whether that occurred. Hard-hit New York hit its peak number of deaths three days ago, according to the model, but hundreds of deaths are still expected daily for the coming weeks.

Governors on East and West coasts form pacts to decide when to reopen economies
The first such group to be announced came Monday on the East Coast. Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said his state, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Rhode Island each plan to name a public health and economic official to a regional working group. The chief of staff of the governor of each state also will be a part of the group, which will begin work immediately to design a reopening plan. Later on Monday, the West Coast states of California, Washington and Oregon also announced they are joining forces in a plan to begin incremental release of stay-at-home orders. Governors of the three states will collaborate on their approach to getting back to business in "in a safe, strategic, responsible way," as announced by California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom

EXCLUSIVE: South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem on Monday announced a statewide clinical trial of hydroxychloroquine for the possible treatment of COVID-19, making her state the first in the country to institute a program exploring the potential effectiveness of the drug in treating and preventing coronavirus. “From Day One, I’ve said we’re going to let the science, facts and data drive our decision-making in South Dakota,” Noem said in a statement provided to Fox News. Noem, a Republican, announced the “comprehensive” clinical trial Monday after communicating with White House officials in the last week to “let them know that South Dakota’s medical community was ready to step up and lead the way on research efforts." “I made direct requests to President Trump and Vice President Pence to supply us with enough hydroxychloroquine so that it could be made available for every hospitalized person the state may have, as well as those for health care workers on the frontlines and those in the most vulnerable populations,” Noem said. The governor said South Dakota has received doses of hydroxychloroquine to begin the trial. “Today, I’m pleased to report we have received the initial doses we need, and thanks to the leadership of Sanford Health and the assistance of medical teams at Avera and Monument Health, we’re going to be the first state in the nation to do a comprehensive clinical trial to assess whether hydroxychloroquine can treat and perhaps even prevent COVID-19,” she said. Sanford Health is the largest provider of rural health care in the country, according to Noem. With the help of Avera and Monument Health, they will treat “up to 100,000 people including outpatient and hospitalized patients with COVID-19, in addition to frontline health care workers, and high-risk individuals who have been exposed to the virus.”

The NIH actually started a clinical test of this some days ago...I hope the damn stuff works. I have my own doubts about it as a preventative, but if it can keep the ill from spiraling down to death???

Quote: @Hidalgo said:Good news. I also believe there are at least 3 trials underway at the FDA/Federal level using clinical trial protocols complete with comparative care and blinded arms in each trial. Not 1005 sure these are FDA approved or European approved trials? So far most of the feedback on using hydroxychloroquine are anecdotal with no comparative and peer review which are not "comprehensive clinical trails" like the one proposed by South Dakota. Interested in the results of course but these trials take a decent amount of time so not sure how quickly we know? Also, interested in the status of a vaccine which take well over a year normally. Not sure if the FDA can maybe make the trials a little less stringent without sacrificing safety.
