2024 QB Watch

I like the idea of trading down a little for extra picks and drafting Latu or Chop Robinson, then figuring out a way to package some picks and move back into the late first if Nix or Penix are still available but what if you can't find a willing trade partner? That is my biggest fear of taking that risk. If JJM falls to 11, I take him. I'm just not sure he is worth giving up a lot of picks to move up ahead of Atlanta and the Giants who have more to offer than we do. If Atlanta signs Kirk then that is one less team we need to worry about, but the Giants are the sleeper team that scares me the most to poach a QB we have targeted. They are only tied to Jones for 2024 the way his contract is structured.
I think the Broncos are a contender for a top 4 qb too...

Giants did themselves a solid with how they structured Jones' deal. I dont think its that tough for them to get out of it after 24.

It would not surprise me if the Top 4 (including JJM) are gone by 11.  Then it a matter of how highly they think of Penix or Nix vs one the remaining Edge's.

The irony is that if Cousins doesn't sign with Atlanta, they will almost certainly be our biggest competition for one of the picks in the top 5 for a QB. Denver and Vegas have too far to go and I don't believe they would trade for Fields over an opportunity to draft one of the top 4 QB.

But if he doesn't sign with Atlanta I think that means he probably signed with us, making a settling for Nix or Penix maybe a little more tolerable.
Why is that?  They are likely the most day 1 ready of the QBs in the draft,  also a big knock against them has been their age,  resigning Cousins only likely makes them 2 years older before they are contributing.   I would tend to think the other way,  if you have cousins back,  presumably on a 2 to 3 year deal,  why waste a top pick on a QB that will be 26 before getting a chance?  If I sign Cousins I am spending heavy in FA to put veterans around him,  then using some draft capital to get JJ to mentor.  If I dont want JJ,  then I skip Cousins and get a bridge guy like Browner ( who is still young enough to maybe be more than a place holder) and going with one of the more race ready QB draft picks at 11.

As I've said before, their age is almost irrelevant to me. All things equal, I take the younger guy. But all things are never equal. To me, they can either play QB or they can't. And 5 years from now that's all anyone's going to care about...not that one QB is 27 and another is 29.

I think Bo Nix is going to slide a bit because of his arm strength (or lack thereof).....Penix is the top of the 2nd Tier behind Williams, Maye, Daniels and JJM and there'll be a drop after Penix is drafted until the next QB is taken. I predict 5 first round QBs.

Any QB we would take at 11 will be a reach unless one of the Top 3 somehow falls.

If Kirk walks and they don’t make a move up…there’s literally no point in taking a QB in the first round. You draft a QB in the first round, you’re saying “This is the face of the franchise”, end of story. You’re chained to that guy for at least 3 years.

I would say top 4 and then I agree. Williams, Maye, Daniels or JJM. I really like certain parts of Penix's game, but he's a mid-to-late 1st round pick IMO. As a Plan B, if Minnesota were to trade back a few spots, grab some additional comp AND select Penix at like #17-#25....I don't think I'd hate it. But who knows what is even possible or probable? Who knows what Minnesota's QB ranking board looks like? Just because Minnesota wants to do something badly (like say trade up) doesn't mean its going to happen. The Vikings won't be operating in a vacuum. Most likely lots of interest by some teams to get a Tier 1 QB prospect.

Pretty extreme take in light of the general inability of the public, draft "experts" and teams themselves to accurately identify who the actual best future NFL QBs will be.

The "top 3" as you put it is a moving target that will continue to move for several years after the draft, as everyone discovers the reality of these kids and what they can or can't do in the pros.

In an interview with Schefter a few years ago he said that this time of year he knows things he can't talk about. Might there be trade talks brewing for the #1 overall pick?

Apparently the Commanders desperately want to move up for Caleb Williams, who is from and played high-school football in the DC area. It would be interesting to see what they'd have to give up to make that happen

Where would Love rank in this years groupings, I remember reading last year he would be 4th behind Young, Stroud, and Richardson but well ahead of Levis.  He was the the ranked fourth behind Burrow, Tagovailoa, and Herbert and picked before Hurts.  For me I would prefer to get someone to play behind KC, complain about a wasted pick for a couple of years.  Hopefully there is a sweet spot in Cap hit and contract length to make it happen
