Aaron Rodgers may choose to retire from the NFL if he doesn't get his way in free agency, according to The Athletic.

As the former MVP reportedly considers offers from the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers, he would prefer to sign with the Minnesota Vikings, according to the outlet.

If Rodgers doesn't get an offer from Minnesota, he may retire.

The Vikings have an opening for a veteran quarterback after last year's starter, Sam Darnold, signed with the Seattle Seahawks. However, Minnesota also has former Michigan national champion J.J. McCarthy, the team's first-round pick in the 2024 draft.

Rodgers, at 41 years old, is not considered a long-term solution for any team.

Famed NFL agent Leigh Steinberg, who has negotiated contracts for multiple Hall of Fame quarterbacks, told Fox News Digital he envisions Minnesota as a "positive fit" for Rodgers at this stage in his career, especially due to McCarthy's presence as a potential protégé and the team being suited to win in the short-term.

"So, you need to have a situation where, because Aaron at best maybe plays another year, maybe plays another two years, but it's not a permanent solution, so it's a one- or two-year fix," Steinberg said. "So, he could go to a team that's really good but just needs that last little piece to put them over the top, and he could mentor a younger quarterback."

Steinberg also believes a team without a chance to win in the short term with no young quarterback on its roster would not be as good a fit. The Giants are a team that fits that mold. The Steelers may have had a winning record last season but aren't a shoo-in to be good again this year. They also don't have a young project quarterback.

"A team that's really dissatisfied with their quarterbacking that takes him wouldn't be as positive of a solution," Steinberg said.

If Rodgers does end up getting an offer from the Vikings and signing with them, he would follow a nearly identical career path to that of his Green Bay Packer predecessor, Brett Favre. Like Favre, Rodgers played the vast majority of his career with the Packers, winning a Super Bowl before being traded to the New York Jets. Favre then spent his final two years on the Vikings.

I wanted to opine loquaciously on this, but having the Vikes say "Nah, thanks for your consideration, go be successful elsewhere". will be adequate.

Mike Silver: There's a '50-50' chance Aaron Rodgers winds up in Minnesota

The Athletic columnist doubled down on his report detailing the quarterback's desire, and the Vikings' interest, of him playing in Minnesota.

Word has it Aaron Rodgers wants to play for the Minnesota Vikings. The chances of it happening are apparently a coin flip.

Mike Silver, a columnist for The Athletic who was among those who reported Rodgers wants to play in Minnesota and is waiting on word from Kevin O'Connell and the Vikings before making a decision about his future, doubled down on his report from Saturday, saying on the Just Your Opinion, Man podcast Sunday it's "50-50" whether he signs in Minnesota.

"One thing we cannot tell you, and that's because it hasn't been decided yet, is what will (Vikings coach) Kevin O'Connell ultimately choose?" Silver said on the podcast. "And some people who are pretty familiar with what's going on in that building have told us it's literally 50-50 in their eyes."

Silver, Dianna Russini and Alec Lewis reported on Saturday that the decision of whether to bring Rodgers aboard is in the hands of O'Connell, who's weighing whether to bring in the four-time NFL MVP or roll with J.J. McCarthy, who missed all of his rookie season due to a meniscus injury but is expected to be a full go in 2025, and he's someone they're quite high on.

While other insiders have reported the Vikings have no interest in Rodgers, Silver says that doesn't appear to be the case. Right now, it's all about O'Connell weighing what the decision to bring him in would mean for the franchise. The Vikings are poised to win now, and Rodgers could give them their best chance. But McCarthy is poised to be the long-term starter.

"(O'Connell's) the guy who's got to get out there every day and answer if it goes badly and J.J. McCarthy's growth is stunted because of it or seemingly stunted, that's going to be on him," Silver said. "If there's drama with Aaron Rodgers, which I would argue is much less likely in a situation like this where (Rodgers) has so much respect for the play caller and the culture is so good in that building, but still, if stuff starts to happen, that's going to be Kevin O'Connell's thing. And most importantly, the Vikings haven't had a lot of success of picking quarterbacks that high and having them develop into franchise guys. They're excited about McCarthy coming off the injury, so they don't want to mess that up.

"On the other hand, I think the counterargument, and it's a strong one, is we're built to win now, we've never won a Super Bowl, this guy's one of the greatest to ever spin it, and we think he can still spin it. And if J.J. McCarthy's really the G that we think he is, he's going to lead our franchise for a decade or more, he's gotta be able to handle that scenario for a year, and if it goes more than a year, then it's a great problem to have because you're winning."

Will it be Rodgers or will it be McCarthy this season? Flip a coin.

What this story is is mostly conjecture on what Silver thinks KOC's mindset would be on signing Rodgers, than what the repercussions would be of doing so on JJM and the organization. No shit dude. Saying its a toss up is really a clever way of covering his ass since he's extended himself big time on selling people on the fact that this is being considered by the Vikings. He only knows what Rodger is telling him, he hasn't a freaking clue what is going on with the Viking's braintrust. You don't agonize for this long over this decision if your KOC, you just don't. Why? Thinking it over this long won't change anything for the better....it just becomes overthinking at that point and I don't see smart people in Minnesota doing that. This is why I'm skeptical of this report. Now people's reputations in the media are riding on this.

Interesting tidbit out there: Minnesota never did offer Daniel Jones a contract.

slightly surprised...but it may have been a non-starter situation if minimally Dimes wanted to compete for Qb1. I suspect that was the case....
