Capers now on board

Zimmer didn't rule out giving up defensive play-calling, saying he's working through all that as he transitions to co-DCs Adam Zimmer and Andre Patterson. "If I feel like the best thing for the team is for me to call defenses, I will. And if I feel like it’s not, then I won’t."

Anyone else have the feeling that the Wilfs were pissed off after the 2nd Green Bay game and that's why we heard so much about Zimmer maybe being gone, going to Dallas, etc? And why Zimmer was so defensive in front of cameras, wondering out loud why a 10-win coach should be on the hot seat?

I don't think that was just a media fabrication. I think it's possible that the Saints game made the Wilfs re-evaluate, and kept him in place on the condition that he make some substantial changes. Could be wrong, but that's kinda what my gut says.

IMO, I think Zimmer realizes that maybe some of the better minds in the league are on to him situationally. I believe him when he says he recruited Capers on his own without a mandate from ownership. Its a good move to have fresh eyes on something he's been staring at for years and years.

Trees for the forrest.  I agree I think this was all a Zim decision.  Hoping it pays off.

He won't have a lockdown Corner for the first time in ages. He probably hated playing so much Zone but it worked. I'm betting he wants to keep tinkering with combo coverages but is breaking in a new DBs Coach and new Co-DCs. Perfect time to add a veteran hand to help with all the transition on the Defensive side of the ball.

Interesting stuffhttps://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-role-based-on-how-dom-capers-can-contribute-the-most
Seems to me that Zimmer is just staying ahead of the game.  Always innovating, never sitting still.

Zimmer explained that before the 2019 season ended, he had written that
he wanted to "get another defensive guy in there that has a background
with a lot of different things."

"We've been running this defense for a long, long, long time, and I just
thought it would good to get some new, fresh ideas," Zimmer added.

Mike Zimmer said during a conference call Tuesday morning that
Capers has "always had really good ideas in the pressure game
defensively."

"I just wanted another idea-guy, really, someone to come in and
have a better way of doing things than we've done it in the past … or at
least someone able to say, 'Have you thought about doing it this way or
that way?' Then we all sit in a room and figure out how we want to do
things," Zimmer added. "I just think with the experience he has and the
number of things he's done in his career — basically doing a lot of the
same things in Jacksonville [last season] that he'll be doing here."

Capers told members of the media Tuesday that he was surprised when Zimmer called with the job offer.

Greed, does this mean Zim isn't that old dinosaur, whose living in the past and can't adapt to "today's game"...as some have suggested? Wink

Best thing about Zim is that he is always looking to improve/innovate.  Sometimes it doesn't work as hoped, but he certainly doesn't rest on his laurels.
