Just because a player doesn't leave is no indicator that they don't have other interest or offers...in some cases better offers.  Pretty naive to think that a player from minny wouldn't want to stick around for what should be an exciting year or two.
Ridiculous, he didn't leave the first time because he did not warrant any interest.  As I said, every team has a ST guy that fans think are irreplaceable, but they aren't.  Name me one team that would pay Sherels 2M to be a PUNT returner (actually that was loaded question, there were none), not kick returner, he does punts.  Yeah, he is on the coverage unit, but every team has a designated gunner.

Who said irreplaceable?   Your words not mine.  Who said 2 million ?  As far as I have heard terms have not been disclosed for this deal.  I argued against keeping him early in his career as he was and still is a major liability in coverage on defense,  but he is one of the better special teams players in that he contributes at a pretty high level on 3 of the 4 units and that is a lit more than many 2nd and 3rd string players do.

Why not wait until actual terms come out before freaking the fuck out or making up narratives?

I not sure who to compare Sherels too in terms of strictly punt returner and special teams ace.  Does anyone have a similar player in mind that we can compare contracts?

Sherels

2017 salary of 2 million - finished 7th in per return yards at 9.5
2016 salary of 2 million - finished 8th in per return at 10.4
2015 - 1.25 million and 13th
2014 - 1 million and 6th
2013 - he finished 1st in the NFL with a 15.2 per return yards

So he is a very consistent Top 10 punt returner and a good special teamer and below average backup corner.  I have no idea how much that is worth and don't know who to compare his salary too?

Especially a quiet guy like Sherels.

It is really just speculation because we don't know.  Special team aces don't garner much press so I doubt too many journalists are pressing their sources to find out what Sherels got offered elsewhere.

As to "just a returner", I wonder if some people watch the games or just the red zone package?  No he isn't a top shelf corner.  But what team has that talent at the 5th CB?  Either that is a young raw guy, or a guy who offers something else, like Marcus.  Best gunner, cover guy on kicks.  Excellent punt returner that doesn't make mistakes.

the team has been trying to replace him,  going to camp and watching the last few years I would say every year the position with the most competition is the PR job. I dont remember last year,  but 2 years ago there were about 8 guys being used at PR to try and find a better option.  I dont think people quite understand how much nerve it takes to stand back there and not waive for a FC every time without muffing the catch because you started to peek just a second to soon.   Maybe the world isnt beating down his door with fists of cash,  but to assume a top tier PR with good kick coverage skills would go unwanted by 31 other teams is a bigger stretch than anything I have suggested IMO.  Also kind of nuts to think that the Vikings would have given 2 million if there wasnt an equal or nearly equal offer on the table by another team.

And if you go back a year (or 2?) to when Marcus was hurt and AT had to return punts.  He made the mistake of fielding the punt inside the 10 and then used his off arm to break his fall while tackled and the refs ruled he fumbled the ball and Dallas recovered.   That little mistake cost us the game against a very good Dallas team.

Hopefully not much is guaranteed because he is not a very good corner at all.

He is going to turn 31 at the end of September too.  So he is done as far as getting better as a corner.

While he is a good returner he is far from great.  He is no Tyreek Hill.

I don't understand wasting a roster spot on a player that is unable to be relied upon to play their position.

If he was a Devin Hester type then I could see using a spot just for a returner.

You have to be exceptional to only be a returner IMO.

But heh, they will likely bring back Newman too.  Then not draft any corners and hope that the current group will magically get better next year and not get their arses handed to them again vs the Eagles.

Marcus Sherels adds nothing to the corner back group.  Nothing.

Darius Phillips is an interesting prospect as is Mike Hughes. Both have upside as corners and can return punts.

It is not use though.

Any player from Minnesota and who has played ball in Minnesota is above reproach.

The bias is clear.

Hopefully, not too much is guaranteed if they decide to cut him.
I am with you 100%. We talk about having backups that can fill in at a pinch and play at a high level yet everyone knows Sherels is not one of those. I know he is a great guy and has done his time but he was not playing for free and made his money when he was in his "prime". So I am with you.... we should keep the best players on the 53 unless you bring something really special to the special teams group. He also has been around for over 5 years so he can claim NFL "benefits" I think.

Last time I checked, there are three phases to the game...  Offense, defense, and special teams.

Some may not want to give Sherels credit, but he's earned his spot on the roster every year.  Nothing has been handed to him.  Here's a few quotes to chew on...

“He’s a guy that sticks around, number one. He gets his opportunity,”
Vikings Head Coach Mike Zimmer said of Sherels. “He does a good job
there. He’s played corner for us, he’s played nickel for us, he’s played
safety for us. At the end of the day, he’s a very valuable guy.” Safety Harrison Smith also had big praise for Sherels after the game.
“Marcus
Sherels, he can play any position on the football field,” Smith said.
“He does it so casually. He scores – no celebration. ‘Been there, done
that.’
“He’s there all the time,” Smith continued. “He’s not
flashy, he’s not celebrating, so the casual fan might not notice him,
but we notice him every day. He’s one of the biggest value players in
the whole league. He’s one of the best punt returners – I think he is
the best punt returner in the game
[…] He doesn’t make many mistakes, he
can go in there and play defense. I know he could play offense, too, if
he wanted.”

but he doesnt put up big fantasy numbers...  some people refuse to accept that teams have to carry a few guys specifically for their special teams contributions,  they just dont want to accept that its a significant part of the game.

like i said, it would be great if they could find a stronger position player to fill MS's role,  and they have been looking,  its just not as easy as some people think to replace Marcus.
