I said this the other day: I think Aaron Rodgers would rock in this offense. But do I think they should sign him? No. Either you believe in JJ McCarthy or you don't. Him sitting for another year does zero for him and actually might fuck with his head a bit. Its Superbowl or bust with Rodgers and that's a ton of pressure for everyone in the organization. There's a higher probability of this not working than working. Some of you act like its a mortal lock that the team will win a championship....still have to go through Philly and Detroit. And now probably Los Angeles with Washington not far behind.

Time to hand the keys to the kid and don't look back.

I didn't think it was a big deal when the Vikings were considering Darnold and it wouldn't be a big deal if he sits behind Rodgers for a year. The goal is win the Super Bowl.

So here's what my gut says. Rodgers would LOVE to play in this offense. He thinks he can win a Super Bowl in this offense. And the Vikings would love to have Rodgers...as our backup. He's 41 years old and he isn't what he used to be. He'll be 42 by the time the playoffs roll around. He has no right to expect a starting role. But that's what he wants. And I think he wants the Vikings to declare him the starter and they're not willing to do that.

Ownership, however, is intrigued. Can a 42yo, 4-time MVP, with the best surround he's ever had, finally win this team its first Super Bowl? Brady did it at 43. Is it worth the cultural chaos? Or is everyone overreacting about that? Are we really going to let Rodger's eccentricities prevent this team from its first championship? Joe Namath wore pantyhose. Aaron's just misunderstood.

For their part, the Vikings want him to come in, give us the security we need, and are willing to pay for. But at the very least Rodgers has to compete with JJ. And I think everyone including Rodgers, knows that he may not win that competition. And if he doesn't, he might just just throw a fit, retire and leave us stranded. So we have a stalemate while the Vikings consider other options....

There. Have I pissed off everyone yet?

The longer this goes on the more I think we’re in the potential mix for things.  Totally agree that Rodgers would love to play here as would every QB.  I do think we structured contracts in a way to leave it open to spend big money on Rodgers.  I think from Rodgers perspective there’s just us and Pittsburgh and after that I don’t think there’s a team he would play for, so if we’re not in the mix, I think he’d just sign with Pittsburgh, unless he really wants to just avoid minicamps and whatnot.  I don’t think the Vikings as a team are really concerned at all about Rodgers being a cancer for the short term.  We’re a great locker room with strong coaches.  There’s probably some amount of concern how the fans would react, because we’re strongly opinionated, but they probably assume that winning solves those problems and with Rodgers we’re probably at least double digit wins, so I doubt that’s highly concerning.  I think it’s all about how much they like JJM, which I think they really like him a lot.  I think Rodgers is probably really pressing for a multiple year deal and we’re really trying to limit it to a single year.  Like he probably wants 2 years $100M and we’re at 1 year $40M, because we have options, and everyones just sitting on it for a bit to see how strong convictions are.

The only way he comes here is as the agreed back-up with an incredibly short leash if anything starts to go sideways.  That being said, I just don't see it.  You don't load up this way to have a QB controversy.  And, the way Rodgers played last year was certainly worse than I expect McCarthy to play.  He'd be the best no. 2 QB in the league, though, so I'm okay with that if he'd accept that role.  Problem is, he won't... There is no f..king way we're into Rodgers in the $40MM area. He was a well below average QB last year. We "may" pay him $25MM for two years. I don't see it being a penny more, even if he agrees to act like an altar boy and accept the no. 2 role.

If Rodgers signs here it's to be the starter. Any talk of him signing on to be a backup to McCarthy is nonsense and if that was the scenario given to him by the Vikings, he would have signed in Pittsburgh already. Remember just a couple weeks ago there was concern with McCarthy recovery and putting back on body weight? It might not be the worst idea to have JJ starting the season as the backup and taking real practice reps. That doesn't mean he doesn't get a chance to start at some point during the season.

I just want to see what JJM has. He already lost a year. I don't want any more washed retreads

Usually agree with you, but I just don’t see a scenario where he signs on as the starter unless the injury is a long term issue.  That was not a complex surgery.

Are we getting 2021 Rodgers?

Sign me up.

2024 Rodgers isn’t worth the distraction or drama.

I hate that this is still a story.

Why sign on to be a backup when he could sign on to the starter in Pittsburgh or New York?  Again, it really boils down to do the Vikings think they are better off for this upcoming season with Rodgers starting or JJ starting on what most agree is a championship caliber roster. I really think the Vikings are considering the best way to play this on all levels and Rodgers is giving them the time to do so because Minnesota is his preferred destination by a large margin.

He didn’t play well enough last year to get a guaranteed starter job over McCarthy. If he’s guaranteed a starting job in any capacity, that’s terrible news for the Vikes
