F.A. 2024 (No Kirk Zone)

I know this is a no-Kirk thread, but signing him (or not) is going to dictate much of what we do in free agency. And not just because of the money.

If we let Kirk sign elsewhere, moving up in the draft for a QB who can start right away becomes much more of an imperative. And the cost to do so will require multiple future picks, requiring the Vikings to build their roster thru free agency instead of the draft.
You can sit where you're at or move 2-3 spots up relatively cheaply and still highly likely to get the 4th QB of choice who to me is McCarthy.  Then you may lose a couple of picks, but gain a whole lot of cap space and move on to your future.  Right now, I think that's what you do.  If you need to bridge a year then bring in a Tannehill or whoever to keep JJ happy while McCarthy develops.  I like Kirk a lot, but he needs to take one for the team to help us become more competitive ala Brady while in NE.  If he doesn't want to do that, it's time to part ways and stop the circle of insanity.

Rumors going around that if we are unable to come to an agreement with Cousins, we will pursue Baker Mayfield in free agency. Maybe this is the "other" vet QB option Geoff was alluding to..?
  I'd rather have Dobbs.

Send Dobbs and the  QBOTF through OTA's, Training Camp experience together.

Let KOC and the Vikings staff  coach up Dobbs for an entire off season.

And see what happens.....

They'd  be able to write off the 40 million in deadcap from KC,DH and Davenport.

I'm not sure that would be very popular, but I wouldn't mind it. He has some skills if he could stop the turnovers.

Unlikely. Sure, he'll be a lot cheaper than Cousins. But after winning a playoff game, his projected market value is $27M per, which means the Vikings would be paying about $55M to the QB position, which begs the question: why not just bring back Cousins? He's better, he'd be cheaper and his term would be shorter.

I think the only bridge that even makes a little sense is Russell Wilson, assuming the rumors are true that he'll play for peanuts

I think Russ’ team is saying he’ll play for peanuts right now to drum up a market for when he becomes a FA, in June. Smart.

There will be multiple teams in need of his services and ultimately I bet he makes far more than $1M next season. The market will push his value much higher even if he’s “willing” to play for cheap. Despite that, still might be an option for us if Kirk leaves.

We just wrote off $40 million in dead cap. Doing it all over again would tell me they need a new front office. The reason we have the $28 million in dead cap on Kirk is he agreed to a restructure (didn’t change his cash) so they could sign Davenport. To eat both those would show poor execution on Kwesi’s part. I thought it was a bad idea and I’m not at all surprised it bombed on them.

Going to stay away from Kirk and assume he’s resigned. Draft a QB in one.

Resign Davenport. It really sucked that he was injured last year as he’s been a very good player since he came in the league and he’s just 27. I don’t know if he wanted the short deal last year or if it was Kwesi. Kwesi seems like he’s a little gun shy about deals of any length, so it wouldn’t surprise me. They now know the cap, so hopefully he can keep a couple of these guys.

I want Hunter back, but we all know he’s getting paid as he’s one of the best in the league at what he does. If it doesn’t happen, I hope they get Wonnum resigned. I don’t see he and Hunter both getting resigned. Even Wonnum is going to get a pretty substantial contract.

Coming from outside the organization - I desperately want a penetrating defensive lineman. I don’t care if it’s a 3-4 Defensive end or tackle. They need someone to make a QB move out of the pocket quicker. I don’t care about sacks so much as pressures.

I’d like to see a solid corner picked up. I don’t care if he’s a little older if the contract is reasonable. It’s great to get that 26 year old, but they can get really spendy. I think these moves would put us in good shape pre-draft. I don’t see a need to do anything on offense other than maybe a restructure. A RB maybe if the price is right. In my world though, we already have a starter in Chandler. Otherwise, I’d target Tony Pollard.

If they get the defense where it needs to be, they can compete for a title now.

I have to think Denver would cut him now, with a June 1st designation,  for cap implication,  but IIRC if they go that route then he is able to negotiate immediately.

With a $5M prove-it deal, which is what some are estimating, the Vikings will actually save money by resigning Davenport.

Hitting your points one by one:

Davenport didn’t help us at all last year. Maybe he shoves our faces in it next year but probably best to just move on. He’s been hurt his whole career and has motor questions. Cut bait.

Kirk- Agreed, there’s other threads for that.

Hunter- I want him back too but with how I perceive he perceives he’s been treated by the Vikings— fair or not— it seems unlikely. I would not sign Wonnum as some kind of consolation prize. He was ok last year and bad before that. It’s true we have no one else so I get it, but I still lean move on. I get big time Ray Edwards vibes here and moving off him worked out.

DT- Agree 100%. We need one bad. Philips has been decent but outside him there’s nothing. It’s startling how bad our line might be next year without some new blood and I’m interested to see what the team can or can’t do here.

CB- Again, yes. Pat Pete was a great move at the time. Hopefully they can find and even overpay for a guy like that. I also liked the Murphy move and I’m glad he’s back.

Bottom line is the defense is in desperate need of more impact players and we need to pay what it takes to get SOMEONE, it really doesn’t matter where.

Who are the top FA's?
Are the Vikings targeting anyone in particular?
Are they in a position to sign anyone of significance beyond their own?

Wouldn't Wilkins and Sneed look good in Vikings purple?  :p
Christian Wilkins at DT
Bryce Huff at OLB/DE
C. Williams or Mason Cole at center

Resign Hunter, Risner
Draft QB in the 1st round (at 11 or moving up)
