Sherels re-signs 1 year contract w/Vikings
#11
No doubt there are cases of NFL teams, including the Vikings, mistreating players about their salaries. But another thing to consider is that players often ask for, and receive, deals which are back-loaded to include high - but not guaranteed - salaries in the later years. Those may be desired for a couple of reasons, including ego ("This makes my contract look really big and will gain some fame for me when it is reported as such") or wishful thinking ("4 years from now I will be getting $6 Million").

But if those end-of-contract salaries are not guaranteed, they are just OPTIONS that the team may choose to elect at their discretion. And...that is not a secret kept from the player or their agent. It's a very common and widely-known practice in the NFL. These guys have a "union" that negotiated a deal that allows this kind of contract, and each individual player accepts them.

We - and NFL players - should all think of any money in a contract which is not guaranteed as being functionally the same as a 5th-year option for a first round draft pick. Did anyone scream about the team being run by snakes in suits when they didn't pay Christian Ponder his 5th-year option?

Restructuring is often the plan from the day a contract is signed, and these players know it. They negotiate these deals when they are in the prime of their careers, but some believe they will be young and strong forever, and some think the money will keep coming for many years. Then they come to the ending years, and they want to act like every penny of their big deal was guaranteed. But it wasn't. I'll save my anger until NFL teams start refusing to pay the guaranteed salaries.

Hopefully not much is guaranteed because he is not a very good corner at all.

He is going to turn 31 at the end of September too.  So he is done as far as getting better as a corner.

While he is a good returner he is far from great.  He is no Tyreek Hill.

I don't understand wasting a roster spot on a player that is unable to be relied upon to play their position.

If he was a Devin Hester type then I could see using a spot just for a returner.

You have to be exceptional to only be a returner IMO.

But heh, they will likely bring back Newman too.  Then not draft any corners and hope that the current group will magically get better next year and not get their arses handed to them again vs the Eagles.

Marcus Sherels adds nothing to the corner back group.  Nothing.

Darius Phillips is an interesting prospect as is Mike Hughes. Both have upside as corners and can return punts.

It is not use though.

Any player from Minnesota and who has played ball in Minnesota is above reproach.

The bias is clear.

Hopefully, not too much is guaranteed if they decide to cut him.

obviously you are new here.

Sherels has hardly been above reproach.  But if he is so awful, why has he stuck in the NFL for this many years?

Don't know why?  Spielman loves him apparently.

Why were there no other teams beating down his door to sign him the last two years?

Only one team was stupid enough to give him 2 mil last year.

Hopefully they did not do the same amount this year.

I am not mad at him personally for making all that he can.  More props to him.

He is just not good enough to be only a returner.

But Sherels also is an elite coverage guy on kickoffs — as an outside safety — and on punt returns as one of the gunners...  :o :o

Cuz Spielman values his mancrushes over winning...

I actually agree with you.  He is overpriced as a returner, an aging returner.  When he comes in at CB, he is immediately targeted and he struggles.  He ALWAYS looks good in pre-season when he is playing against rookie FAs.

On his last contract expiration, he tried FA and got nothing, so he re-signed with the Vikings.  Every team in the NFL has their special team darling, and every team's fans think that this person is so valuable that they can't let him go because 31 other teams would snap him up in no time.  Not true.  Sherels is proof of that.

Just because a player doesn't leave is no indicator that they don't have other interest or offers...in some cases better offers.  Pretty naive to think that a player from minny wouldn't want to stick around for what should be an exciting year or two.

Seriously?  You think other teams wanted a dude who turns 31 in Sept to only return punts for them?

I prefer they get someone like a Trent Taylor who did just as well as Sherels returning punts AND caught 43 passes for 430 yards with 2 TDs.

That dude did the job of Sherels AND Treadwell AND Floyd last year except for special team coverage which is not that difficult to replace.

That is the kind of player I would like to see in the position of punt returner.
