I think this is the year the Vikings should go big! Obviously, Brees is staying in New Orleans and I am guessing that the Skins will at least transition tag Keenum making other teams set his market which they probably will match unless they are completely mental.
I would love to see the Vikings do whatever it took to jump up to #3 to try and get Josh Allen or another QB if you like someone else (like Josh Rosen or Sam Darnold). Yes it will cost three first round picks including this years or a combination of those picks and a player (Anthony Barr?). But maybe it will pay off?
I think Allen is similar to Wentz in stature and athleticism but needs some development.
In the meantime, I would likely extend Keenum (4 year 72 to 78 mil) and go very hard after a guard in free agency. Andrew Norwell would be very nice but I think the Panthers will figure out a way to keep him although they might not. They gave Matt Kalil that huge deal and they gave Trai Turner a huge deal. Their right tackle Darryl Williams performed very well this year and will be a free agent in 2019. Ryan Kalil is a free agent in 2019 too.
They drafted Taylor Moton in the 2nd round last year and he may be the player they want to take over for Norwell. They could be tapped out in terms of spending on the offensive line at least for this year.
Norwell is going to cost 11 mil per year at the least but would be worth it IMHO.
If they do not go for a guard in free agency then I would hope they target a defensive tackle like a Sheldon Richardson or Dontari Poe in free agency.
But really, once they go get a QB then they can try to sign players later in free agency to one year cheaper prove it deals.
I doubt they go for it but I think losing a couple of first round picks is not that bad when you consider they lost the last two first round picks. Treadwell and Bradford have not proved to be worth that investment.
If we trade 3 first round picks for anyone I'll need to become a packer fan. The current team has been built on developing our drafted guys why the F would you give away the farm on the hope you land a QB?
Hindsight being 20/20 we should have tanked 2 years ago instead of trading for Bradford. We would have picked very high and could have loaded up on premier talent.
Also Keenum is going to get in excess of $20m/yr. If you sign him and want someone big in FA then you have to choose who out of our young guys we wont resign because we wont have the cap room to do so. We've spent big money in Reiff and Remmers on our line. I imagine we're not going to be able to cut Remmers do to dead money so I'd assume we need to get lucky via the draft and cheaper options on the line.

I think I kind of laid out how the last two first round picks that were used have not panned out. You are very worried about first round picks which is reasonable but the reality is they often do not pan out. The same would hold true if they traded up for a young QB. Allen could be the next Paxton Lynch.
The Vikings have 64 mil in cap space without a QB on the roster. They do have to decide when they will extend Diggs, Hunter, Kendricks, and Barr. That will take up a lot of the cap space but there should be enough to sign at least one high priced free agent.
Remmers can come off the books after next season. Rudolph will be a free agent after the 2019 season and could be approached about some sort of restructure/extension. Murray is probably not going to get 5 mil in 2019 and might not get the 5.75 mil in 2018.
The Vikings may wait until the last month or two of the season before negotiating with Diggs, Hunter, and Kendricks. If they did trade up for a young QB and signed Case for 20 mil, they probably can move on from Case after two seasons which is when you hope the young QB is ready.
The salary cap is not a problem.
I think the real question is will they want to pay two linebackers top money. Barr could command anywhere from 10 to 12 mil per year in a new deal and Kendricks will not be too far behind. If the Vikings were to trade Barr (for example) they would save 12.3 mil in cap space but would have to replace him obviously. Maybe Nigel Bradham would be worth a 6 mil per year deal? I am not advocating trading Barr but I am just looking at the contracts and thinking of some alternative possibilities.
I think what the Vikings should have done when Teddy got injured was just go with their backup that they had on the roster. Why Spielman did not trust Hill to play the season is a mystery to me? I mean, why did he trust Case this year? Because Teddy might come back? That is doubtful especially when you consider what Zimmer said about the research the team did on athletes who suffered a similar injury to Teddy. He said it normally took about two years. He did not say if those athletes regained their previous form.
The point is that Spielman had no faith in his backup and panicked. I think he should have waited for a few weeks to see what happened, what other QBs were available, and if the price for Sam came down.
Oh well, it is just a thought and I would not be upset if they did something like trading up to the top of the draft. I think the roster is strong enough to survive and it could be the perfect time.
Who knows, maybe the QBs will not all go high and the Vikings can jump up to one of the Bills picks?
It would take more than 3 first round picks to move up from 30.
I think you should eliminate 3T and QB from the conversation. Those are obvious. I've changed my mind about 3T. With Jaleel Johnson being a 4th rounder last year and reportedly impressing in camp, I'm not sure if it makes a ton of sense to draft one high. I think the best move there is to sign a veteran who can upgrade the position and/or be a bridge to JJ. We actually need a couple of interior DLs.
I've always been a fan of acquiring to your strengths. Rather than fill holes, you find out what you do well and you fortify it. I think Dalvin Cook is going to be the engine of the team next year. I'd give him a formidable offensive line by drafting (or signing) a RT/G type.
He would compete with Hill at RT. If he wins, Hill and Collins are good, solid OT depth. If he loses, he moves to LG to compete with Easton. You move Remmers to RG where he'll compete with Isadora.
Ideally...
Reiff, Hill, Collins
Easton, Isadora
Elflein, Easton
Remmers, Isadora
D1, Hill

I think the need at 3T will be determined by how the Vikings approach Tom Johnson and Shamar Stephen. You can make valid cases for both to stick around or let go. The coaching staff does like Jaleel Johnson, but that doesn't mean he deserves to be handed starting reps either. After Floyd's cap hit comes off the books there is room to add salary at DT if the Vikings want to make a play in FA. Right now I would shy on the conservative side of resigning Stephen to a team friendly deal (3 years $7.5M) due to his flexibility and make a play for Star Lotulelei. Coming off a poor season in Carolina he may be a candidate for 1-2 bridge deal similar to Dontari Poe. Zimmer loves former 1st round pick and Star would fit nicely in the Vikings reformed 4-man rotation (Linval/Stephen/J. Johnson/Lotulelei). The cumulative cap impact would still leave the Vikings outside the top 10 in DT spend.
O-line is another interesting spot. I could see them surprise and try to rake in another big name UFA with versatility (e.g Justin Pugh). That'd take most of the pressure off to find a day 1 starter early in the draft. But I don't think it would prevent you from drafting a tackle early either.
Jaleel has promise, but he was a late rounder. No idea if he is going to be the type of 3-tech we need to collapse the pocket. Seems like Tom Johnson started to wear down or was neutralized as the season went on. Some want to point to the DEs for the lacking pass rush, but I think our interior push suffered and that allowed the QBs room to operate.
Would love to see someone like Lotulelei. But I do think Stephen is a must resign (within reason) as we need that NT and Joseph needs rest and backup.
How about FS? Yes, Sendejo has value and plays hard, I don't think he is a BAD safety, but I think he is a lot like Smith in playing style. Consider how this defense would look if Smith was next to a safety with great speed who can cover like an extra CB? I know those guys are not common and one who comes to mind in the next draft, Minkah Fitzpatrick, is probably long gone by pick #30. It would shock some people to have a secondary with 4 first-rounders, but that is another form of building an area of strength.
QB, OG, 3T in that order, although 3T would probably have to be our first draft pick to make an impact. After that I think we need to get a depth DE and a backup OT.
Alot of good answers in here. bottom line is i believe you draft the best player available on your board with few exceptions, as in someone that could potentially start for you falls
I keep thinking I watched a different team is the Playoffs. Maybe I'm color blind?
What I saw was Hill not being able to adequately block in Pass Pro. Just like Remmers before him.
Folks, both are League Average. They'll hold up fine against a lot of guys but once you get to the Postseason you're likely not facing regular dudes. Now you're facing Pro Bowl and All Pro DEs.
I lauded the Remmers signing because League Average was a massive upgrade over what the team had in recent years. But that's not good enough against the Jordans and Grahams of the world.
Trader Rick passed on some chances to get a developmental OT last Draft, though a few of those guys went right before he picked, so that may have altered his plans.
Can't risk finding a guy to develop any more. This team showed it can compete for the ultimate prize now. Doubt the FO.looks to FA for help given what they spent last year to sign Reiff & Remmers.
I would personally use the 1st Round pick on a RT. And I'd move up if necessary. Minnesota doesn't need 6 new contributors from this Draft. That's the benefit of a deep Roster.
RT to compete with Hill and hopefully move him back to his swing Tackle role where I think he has the highest value. Get another scat Back later in the Draft to replace Jet. Sign a veteran CB to replace Newman. Sign a veteran DT as the bridge to JJ. Another mid-round OG to compete with Izzy and Easton. A higher pick at DE to rotate with Griff.
Bam! Easy peasey off season. Wel...except for that QB conundrum.
