RapSheet says: Vikings and Darnold want to work something out

I wonder how much of this is last second posturing in hopes of getting someone to bite and offer up a pick.

I'm not sure if the Vikings are just trying to lock him in as a tradable commodity or what the situation is, but it certainly goes against building around a young quarterback on a rookie contract.

I'm guessing that if they are able to sign Darnold to a multi-year contract, the contract will be backloaded with the first year amount no more than they planned on paying a back up QB.

I'm not sure why Darnold would sign a deal like that when he could make more on the open market, perhaps substantially more.

I'm reading a bunch of conflicting reports now....some saying the opposite of this. Surprise. Silly Season.

Yup, Matthew Berry reporting the Vikings want McCarthy to start next year and there may not be "much of a market for Darnold" and his best bet might be staying in Minnesota on a modest deal as there's a scenario where he is out of the starting quarterback job market.

I find that hard to believe...but it is silly season

I don't buy it that the Vikings will give Darnold Baker-type of money. You don't intentionally give someone that just to come in and "compete" to start.

This...You don't pay a guy 30-35 mil to "compete" for a job, especially one you "expect" him to lose. If Darnold is re-signed, it's a CLEAR indication that the team doesn't believe that McCarthy is at all ready to start.

Don't forget that security and peace of mind has value as well. It may not be worth $30M, but it's worth something. Because it's certainly possible, despite looking great in that one preseason game, that JJ struggles a bit. Or worse, has another injury or an injury set back. It's not like it hasn't happened before.

And now you're wasting the NFL's best receivers, a rebuilt OL and all these high priced free agents you brought in to win a championship, all because you don't have a legit starting QB. With that in mind, I think the Vikings are probably gauging Jones's market value right alongside Darnold's.

....but you're also wasting a year of JJM's contract and his development. It doesn't make any sense to me for Minnesota to resign Darnold and why Darnold would want to resign without trading McCarthy. Is the market complete shit for Sam? That also says something to the Vikings or should if true.

Somebody explain to me why it shouldn't be JJ McCarthy time this season? Because I haven't heard a good explanation yet. His knee is 100%, not sure why some fans continue to think the team is 'concerned' over this. The injury happened in August of last year.

Statistically speaking it’s more likely JJ is Josh Rosen than Josh Allen. That’s an irrefutable fact. But, upon seeing what KOC has done with less talented QBs in his short tenure here, I’m more than willing to see what McCarthy can do. The sooner the better for obvious reasons.

I also appear to be one of a very few who can remember more than two games from last year. This is just ludicrous to me. What KOC coaxed out of Darnold is about 90% of the reason why he was COTY.  To me, I’d have a bit of faith in Darnold making the next step in year two with a hopefully rebuilt iOL. But, that opinion will probably never get tested.

Any fan still concerned about his knee injury just doesn’t understand what a meniscus tear is.
