Doogie: Contract extension coming for O'Connell

Like Montana Tom said he's a good one. I happen to think he is a special one. One of the top in the league right now. He and Flores are the top reason I am so bullish on the Vikings this year. Marry that coaching with the talent they have, and I expect them to have a competitive season.

I wonder if the unexpected push to extend KOC is actually related to a raise for Flo to keep him with the team going forward.  You may have to bump the head coach to bump the Assistant.

KOC is currently making about $5mm-$7mm from what I can tell..I would bet he'll be in that $13-$16mm neighborhood next.

I'd slot KOC in at around $10 MM a year.

I was thinking 10-12, but since it doesnt affect the cap... fuck it, give him Reid money and hope he earns it. I do think the management needs to realize that you dont find innovative DCs at the dollar store, so when you have one, make it very hard for opposing teams to poach him, even for a HC gig. If they do pay him like a HC, why would he want the title and all the additional grief that comes with it when it wont mean much of a pay raise? Make him comfortable in Minny.

KOC is 36-22 and in his 3rd year. I don't see him in the $10-12M territory. Here's the top 20 paid coaches.

Rank Coach Team Career Record Super Bowl Wins Total Compensation
1 Andy Reid Kansas City Chiefs 258-144-1 3 $25 million
2 Sean Payton Denver Broncos 160-98 1 $18 million
3 Jim Harbaugh Los Angeles Chargers 44-19-1 0 $16 million
4 Sean McVay Los Angeles Rams 70-45 1 $15 million
5 Kyle Shanahan San Francisco 49ers 64-51 0 $14 million
6 Mike Tomlin Pittsburgh Steelers 173-100-2 1 $12.5 million
7 John Harbaugh Baltimore Ravens 160-99 1 $12 million
8 Doug Pederson Jacksonville Jaguars 60-53-1 1 $8.5 million
9 Sean McDermott Buffalo Bills 73-41 0 $8 million
T-10 Matt LaFleur Green Bay Packers 56-27 0 $6 million

to much? to little?

I say to early to go more than that, he had a veteran QB, two of the best WR in the game, and a decent RB his first year and was playing a fairly easy schedule, last year was a little rougher, I say get him into that mid pack salary range for the next few years and make sure its something you want to commit long term to at a higher salary. 10-12 seems fair for a guy that is only getting started on his 3rd year as a HC, and will likely seem like a steal in couple years as the coaching salaries likely continue to rise.

O'Connell deserves a raise. He's a bright young mind, has established a great culture, and he's an offensive guru. If fans don't think he deserves an extension, I don't know what to say. He took Zimmer and Spielman's team and won 13 games with mostly their roster after they were middling records the past two years. Purged salary heading to into his second year and had the team starting to play some great football at the midway point and then Cousins Achilles blew. Kept us competitive and in the WC hunt until the final 2-3 games with smoke and mirrors with the Passtronaut and Nick Mullens.
Now we're 2-0 and fresh off beating the best team in the NFC fresh off a Super Bowl appearance.

I'm fine if he slots in salary-wise behind McVay (has the same winning percentage as him), Shanahan, Tomlin, and John Harbaugh since they've all been to or won Super Bowls... but honestly I don't care what we pay him. He's a great young coach and I hope he's here for a long time.

$10M per year puts him only behind Reid, Payton, both Harbaughs, McVay, Shanahan and Tomlin who have a much larger body of work (and titles to their name).

I remember hoping that we would get Daboll. It's both freeing and humiliating to let that out.

At Kam's and KOC's presser though, I became a fan.

While I agree that he's earned the right to be on the short list of good ones, I think he really doesn't have a ton of motivation to push for a contract extension right now.
If he were to sign one now, for instance, and the Vikings go deep into the playoffs this year, he effectively could be leaving money on the table.
He's under contract through the end of NEXT season. I see no rush in extending him just yet, for either side. One more season (this one) and then the true measure of his value would be a little more accurate.

Now I am not saying he doesn't have "short list" value (he does), I'm saying that the number could move up if his third season exceeded expectations.
Remember, there were almost no expectations for this season.

My prediction...while Doogie might be right and an extension might be in the works, I don't see any need for either side to push right now.
I don't believe its a matter of "IF". I believe its a matter of "WHAT" (the value of the extension).
