We bring in Josh Oliver to help us run the football better and KOC talks about wanting to run the ball more, so why are we getting rid of our best runner and one of the best runners in the game still in his prime? I understand the money aspect, but if we are legitimately trying to win the division, then you find a way to keep a guy like Cook.

I suspect Cookies shoulder is damaged and will never be the same. If true, his YAContact will nit improve much.
We need to get positive yards in our run game, 2nd and ten and 3rd and 8 put too much pressure on the passing game.

If it's a shoulder concern this does make sense. 100%. If it's a moneyball approach of, "we can replace him by committee" then I'm skeptical. For years this board has said Mattison could start for other teams-- what teams, exactly? He stayed in MIN for a cheap deal. That tells me that NFL teams see him the same way I do. Fine player but not in any way a difference maker. JJ and Hock better be ready to go BIG big if Cook is gone (I do think they are).

In a perfect world, you keep Cook and Mattison. But we have to cut somewhere and RB is the best option to gain savings at the least loss of production.

We don't know what Mattison is in a full time roll, however we know Cook is an elite running back who is going to get upwards of 1500 yards in total offense every season and double digit touchdowns. Cook is an excellent pass catcher and a home run threat. Mattison isn't any of those. Our offense becomes much less worrisome for opposing defenses without Davin Cook, which was the point being discussed by Wilcots and Vareen and why they would favor the Lions to win the division over a Cook-less Vikings team.
If he is "damaged goods" that's one thing, but by most accounts that doesn't seem to be the case. If KOC wants to continue transforming us into the Midwest Rams and throw the ball all over the field with running the ball being an afterthought, then fine. But you bring in Oliver specifically to play more big boy ball and run the football, so again, how does moving on from your best runner and second best weapon on offense make any sense? Wilcots was completely befuddled how getting rid of Cook was even a conversation, much less a reality.
Saw a rumor regarding Diggs saying he wouldn’t mind a return to Minnesota now that Zimmer is gone.
Post-June 1st, the money would work for a Cook-Diggs swap. I don’t care who the running back is if we’re watching Jefferson, Diggs, Hockenson, and Addison in the passing game.
Obviously it isn’t going to happen for any number of reasons, but we can dream.

Word is he really loves Minnesota.
Love to have him back. Money's there. And if he's willing to take a pay cut, even better.
But I think it's unlikely. Vikings are already paying Mattison low-end starter money. And the Vikings could use the cash to either sign another defender, or give them slack in the numerous extensions pending.
