Doesn't all of this conjecture really depend on FA, bot just for our team, but for those around us as well?
Its no real secret what teams need coming off the season, but that only where the games begin. So we need OL and DL, we would like about every other position, but if we cut Reiff as some want, that put OL front and center at 14, amd every team behind us will know that, so it increases the odds somebody that needs OL jumps ahead of us for a stud. It also comes down to what other teams do in FA and with their own.
The draft is such a complete crap shoot right now I would be surprised if GMs have even started to look at slotting and boards yet since there are so many variables left to play that could completely shuffle the decks.
Yeah, I don't think teams finish their boards until about a week before the draft. So much is going to be different then.
Thats my point, so many people get so wound up about what is the right direction this time of year and there are so many cards yet to be played its like trying to count into an 8 deck shoe after the first hand..
I don't see Reiff accepting another $5M hair cut. It makes little sense to give him a 3 yr 30M extension (or thereabouts) when the draft class for tackles is very strong.
I think they'll try to trade him (Colts may be interested) and then let him test the market and maybe circle back.
In the draft, I like Sam Cosmi out of all the tackles. Before the season he was right around top 3 and now has fallen a bit. Many folks like Slater better and he did not even play. Cosmi had 495 career true pass sets in his career. He is very athletic and fits the scheme perfectly.
If they could trade down and get back the 2nd they gave away and still get Cosmi that would be great.
I think if you cut Reiff, you need to go all in on the rebuild, call 2021 a transition year where we develop cap freedom in the future. There will be too many question marks to realistically field a SB caliber team, and you need to maximize your future chances. This team can't go into 2021 with a suspect defense and also hamstringing the offense by weakening the OLine.

So Riley Freaking Reiff represents the plug in the boat? The cornerstone holding it all together? Without whom, we tear it all up, throw Dalvin, JJ, Hunter and Kendricks in the back and head down the rebuild road? You don't think you're overreacting just a teensy bit?
Look, the only reason Reiff is such a big question mark is because we've actually prepared to replace him. We drafted a left tackle last year and Reiff's contract this year is such that moving on from him makes financial sense. Problem is, he went and had himself a very good year. So there's the problem.
Personally, I think our line needs all the help it can get and so I try to keep him, but if his contract can turn into Geno Atkins or Joe Thuney? It might be time to start the Cleveland era.
My biggest concern about moving on from Reiff is our investment in Cousins. Not sure I want anything other than a proven quantity on Kirk's blindside. Especially with Mannion as the backup.

No doubt. This is the biggest decision of the offseason. One that is probably keeping Rick and Rob up at night.
On one hand you have security at LT and RG and little cap space to improve the defense. On the other you have a good amount of money to go get your 3T, but you have an unknown at LT and another guard spot to fill.
The best solution might be to neither cut or keep Reiff on his current contract, but extend him. Good LTs are hard to find. He just turned 32 and so he probably has another 3 years in him. He could refuse it and look to get paid as a free agent next year, but he can't expect a big pay day at his age.
Either way, I'm glad the Vikings gave him the million.
@ MaroonBells honestly, I hope it's not keeping anyone up at night unless it's on contract structure.

That is the only way he will be on the roster going forward. I think the chance he's back on the last year of his deal is near 0.

Is anyone else bothered by the idea of losing Reiff, who just turned 32, for Atkins (33 soon) or Short (32)? And OTs, provided they stay healthy, usually can play effectively to an older age than a defensive lineman. Reiff has missed only 9 games in a 9 year career.
I just prefer signing free agents that have some future ahead of them, and maybe losing an older player only to get younger. I hope they keep Reiff, but regardless, let's get a 3T with a little tread left on his tires, like Sheldon Rankins.

We all want a young free agent, but it's not a perfect world. We're restrained by the realities of the salary cap. What is the biggest bang for the least amount of buck? What's more likely to result in a Super Bowl? That's the question and it doesn't have an easy answer. It's possible that a guy like Atkins can come in and turn our DL into the terror it once was. I wouldn't kick that idea outta bed just because we'd only get 2 or 3 years from him. And then there's the argument that we likely drafted Cleveland to replace Reiff. It's not like we don't have other options at LT. Even O'Neill. Even pick #14.
So on balance, what do you prefer? Reiff with Cleveland at guard and a rookie 3T? Or Cleveland, O'Neill or a rookie at LT and an 8-time pro bowl 3T? Yes, I know there are variables in each scenario (G, DE), but it's a good question. It's also possible with some painful cuts and can kicking, we can have both. I'm not here to provide the answer, only to ask the question.
