Jordan Reid On Darrisaw
#1
Christian Darrisaw is the definition of a scheme versatile OT. VA Tech used him a lot on dart/counters. They also had an effective fold scheme on inside zone to allow him to get the second level quicker.

Wrote down Duane Brown as his player comp. Really, really solid player.

Reid is fast becoming one of my go to analysts. Darrisaw really fits nicely in what we do. Beast in the run game and made himself some money vs Miami. Not crazy about him at #14, but no TVs would need replacing.

Nobody wants to create a hole at LT but if there is one position you can feel confident you'll get a day-1 starter at #14 or slightly after its probably OT. So cutting Reiff and using his money to fill other needs where the draft isn't as strong (DT ?) might make some sense. You could start Sewell, Slater, Darrisaw, and Cosmi day 1.

I'd add AVT to that list as well. He and Slater might be guards in the NFL, but until we know what we're doing with Reiff and Cleveland, we don't know where the opening is.

I think Darrisaw is a great fit in Minnesota and moving Reiff inside would give the Vikings an extremely good offensive line. Expensive move yes... but one I could get excited about.

The Vikings just gave Reiff a million dollar bonus when they didn't need to. That doesn't exactly sound like a team in a hurry to cut him. So, is the team working hard to try and extend him one more time to finish his career in Minnesota? If so, does that mean the Vikings want to keep him at left tackle? Will he be willing to move inside to guard for the final chapter of his career for a longer term deal?

As much as I love Darrisaw,... I think the Vikings will actually be focused on the defense side of the ball with their first two draft selections. If you can't restructure Reiff as a high end guard to finish his career as a Viking,.. you then go ahead and draft a guard with one of the 3rd round picks.

O'Neil, Reiff, Bradbury, Cleveland, Udoh

Mixing up the lineup but retaining our best offensive lineman long term might be worth looking at.

I hear a lot of people expressing doubt that an OL is worth pick #14 - but I think there are at least as many question marks among the DT prospects. Barmore and Nixon might be picked in the first round, but IMO they are both just as much developmental prospects as Onwuzurike, Twyman, Tufele, McNeil, Wilson, or even Slaton. The first two had good years in 2020 but none of these have been multi-year studs. Risky to assume any will be instant starters.

On the OL, there are 4-5 prospects much more ready to play, but not as many that look so good a couple rounds later. (And the Vikings are not good at developing OL picked after the 2nd round.) If Darrisaw is available at 14 - and I'm not sure he will be - the Vikings should high-five like they did when Jefferson slipped to them. Then sift through the DTs remaining a round or two later and coach one up.

Key will be the activity in FA.  Pursuing a player like Atkins/Short, particularly after you have moved on from Reiff, would make OL at 14# a logical as well as potential BPA fit.  This team is two more QUALITY players in the trenches (with the healthy return of Pierce and Hunter) from being back into the deep playoff conversation.  Atkins/Short has the proven ability now to step in and be productive, potentially very productive disruption from the inside of the line which makes EVERYTHING BETTER.

You are only as good as your weakest link on the OL.  IF our worst performing lineman can be NFL average at his position, this team makes a big step in 21.

What would be best would be to keep Reiff, acquire Atkins or Short, and if a WR falls into your lap at 14#, well how could you not?

Luckily there are quite a few teams in the 20s that would trade up for pick #14 and that could result in receiving a 2nd round pick. I know mock drafts are mock drafts but seeing different scenarios where guys have fallen makes me think the Vikes will have their fair share of options to slide down and get back that lost pick.

Doesn't all of this conjecture  really depend on FA,  bot just for our team,  but for those around us as well?

Its no real secret what teams need coming off the season,  but that only where the games begin.  So we need OL and DL,  we would like about every other position,   but if we cut Reiff as some want,  that put OL front and center at 14,  amd every team behind us will know that,   so it increases the odds somebody that needs OL jumps ahead of us for a stud.  It also comes down to what other teams do in FA and with their own.

The draft is such a complete crap shoot right now I would be surprised if GMs have even started to look at slotting and boards yet since there are so many variables left to play that could completely shuffle the decks.

Yes.

But I have nothing else to do but run draft simulator after draft simulator.  Do they have a draft simulator support group or my fellow enablers?

Yeah, I don't think teams finish their boards until about a week before the draft. So much is going to be different then.
