Matt Miller at ESPN released his new mock draft today. He's got this for the QB's;

1. Bears- Caleb Williams
2. Patriots- Drake Maye
4. Giants- Jayden Daniel's
7. Raiders- JJ McCarthy

And in what would be the most Viking move ever, he has the us taking Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins with the 22nd pick.
That will most likely be the pick. And Viking nation will justify it somehow.
From the pick range, to the position drafted, to the school drafted from....standard Vikings
Honest to God, I'll lose my fucking mind if they draft a CB. I think the odds are extremely low that happens.
Vikings could use a corner, but it's not a 1st round need, with bigger needs at QB, DT and OLB. Guys like Matt Miller know about college players and the draft, but they pay little attention to NFL team needs, depth charts, windows, cycles, contractual status, etc.

Drafting around 18-22 I believe that JJ and Penix could be there.  If neither is there (with the guys ahead all off the board), I am going BPA (preferred EDGE/DT):

Jared Verse (DE)
Chop Robinson (OLB/DE)
Michael Hall (DT)Ruke Orhorohoro (DE/DT)

AND dealing our 4th for Trey Lance.  I think he's worth the flyer, wish we did it this year then we would know what we have with him at this point.  Cousins-Lance-Hall gives you a QB for 2024, a capable backup, and two potential candidates for QBOTF.

So the 'experts' consensus is there are 4 first round QBs: Williams, Maye, Daniels and McCarthy. Agree or disagree?
I'd have five...

Top 10
Drake Maye
Jayden Daniels
Caleb Williams

11-32
Bo Nix
JJ McCarthy
Some more than others, but I’d be excited about any of these 5.

I’d also take a shot on Fields if the Bears would send him our way and we can bolster the DL in the first (and second?). More than likely Fields will go to a team like Atlanta or Tennessee though. Maybe Las Vegas. I think he’s shown enough to at least be an average starter for a good team, and he's only 24. The problem with him and what might depress his market a bit is say you pick up his fifth year option. That gives a team only two years to decide if he’s worth a massive contract, and at least one of those years will be him learning a new system on a new team. For a 2024 fourth I’d pull the trigger but the opportunity cost of missing out on one of those rookies is not nothing.

EDIT- And no one asked but I’m out on Penix I think unless it’s a middle round pick. Maybe it’s the ghost of Teddy talking but his knee injuries terrify me.

BUMP Regarding Justin Fields... The passing yardage still isn't there but he's playing pretty solid right now. His asking price if CHI moves on is rising. I'll reiterate that if Chicago is amenable, I think the Vikings should seriously consider him for the reasons I said above a few weeks back. Plus, we've lost some more since then.
If we're in range of Daniels or maybe Mccarthy then I'd stick with that plan in the first, but Fields for a third +DT/EDGE in the first is intriguing. With Fields you're also moving on from Kirk and his contracrt, which has pros and cons.

I guess I'd be surprised if Chicago traded Fields to a NFCN rival. The rumor was that Minnesota liked Fields coming out, not sure if that was the current regime or the old one.

If they're convinced that JJ is their guy then do what it takes to trade up for him. Even if it means trading multiple first round picks.
Agree. If it's time (and I think it is) and if he's the guy, then do what it takes. Chiefs moved from 27 to 10 to draft Mahomes by giving up a 3rd and the following year's 1st.
Yup....And they'd do it again all day to Sunday too.

IF they think someone is that future? Go and get him, dont look back.

This is the most important off-season since 2017.
Trade JJ to Chiefs. Now you can do whatever you want in the deaft this year and the next plus you’d have the cap space.

Insert “How about… no! gif”!!!

JJ almost single handedly beat Detroit for us the other day. Pay that man

I just find it so interesting that some fans don't want to pay star players. Isn't that what you are attempting to do as a team every Draft? Cousins wants too much money and JJ and Hunter, etc. Trade 'em! Cap space! Draft picks!

The biggest drawback to trading for Fields is that you lose the advantage of having a QB on a rookie contract & the cap savings that comes with it. Fields was drafted in 2021. If any team traded for him they would certainly pick up his 5th year option. You would have to do that after the 2024 season.

I like Fields and think he would be a nice gamble for us, but I don't see the Bears trading him to a division rival. Kwesi would do it, but could you imagine the egg on the face of the Bears front office if they traded Fields to the Vikings and he turned out great, while the guy they draft turns into a bust. That's a real possibility and I don't think any rational GM would want to risk that.

But yeah, not having the rookie contract to use as an advantage would also suck. It would be interesting to see what kind of deal Fields would get on any type of extension. Is he worth top ten money? Don't know...
