Phillips is 29 and has played in every game the last three seasons. The backups are completely unproven. Redmond flashed a little, but LDR was a scratch in every game, and Ingram-Dawkins is a mid round athletic flyer that didn't even start at Georgia. Taimani has reportedly been basically a non factor in camp. I would have felt a lot better starting a proven veteran run stuffer in Phillips over now having to rely on unproven players. Questionable decision for sure
I agree with you and if this blows up in our faces I’ll be critical of it. But the coaches are the one’s watching the players and HP is the odd man out. The playoff wins haven’t been there but outside the draft, this regime has earned my trust. Great teams know when to cut players loose. Pats and Eagles do it all the time. Im interested to see how this plays out.

I hope they see something in one of the young guys, but who plays and starts at NT now? Hargrave? That's what they were having him do in San Francisco and he wasn't close to being as effective as he was in Philly. I would have liked to keep him as a 5-technique. ESPN is listing Redmond as out starting NT. I don't really see that being his best position and he's a little light in the pants. Taimani is a true NT, but he might not even make the final roster. It's been discussed that perhaps Flores just wants penetrators up front and doesn't subscribe to the typical NT types. That now certainly appears to be the case. Hope it works.

I was ok with Phillips, but knew his limitations also. Good guy. If the DT depth is there like it appears to be and the Viking's have cleared some cap space to grab a WRer, then I'm all for it. He was moved to 2nd team D anyway.

I think it's a certainty they do, Supa. Phillips had been moved to the 2nd team defense. Guys like TID and Elijah Williams have been flashing and we have Taki and Redmond who flashed last year. The Vikings don't make this trade if they weren't happy with Allen, Hargrave, and the young depth behind them.
Plus this opens up some money if they want to add a WR, takes some money off next year's cap (which we are projected to be over by quite a bit), and still let's us roll over a bunch of cap to offset a portion of the cap dollars pushing us over the limit.

I think this is mostly about Flores liking Hargrave better than Phillips at nose. And, unlike some of the younger players like Redmond and the two hyphens, Phillips isn't really much of a pass rusher who can offer much outside.
I also think this might mean that Hargrave will come off on passing downs, giving us a 3rd down front of Greenard, Allen, Redmond, Gink and Turner, or variations thereof.

Just very strange for us to trade our starting nose tackle, who is great in the locker room and the community, who also happens to be coming off his best season as a pro on the eve of the freaking season. We essentially traded him for peanuts. We didn't get a receiver out of the trade....so, why!?
While I don't think we will miss his play, he was good but never great at NT, I just don't get it. He was a starter, a great guy, leader in the community and locker room for a 6th round pick?
I get it, we may have better players behind him, but this is just befuddling.

They like the young guys and Allen and Hargrave look good, so finding room for Phillips to play was going to be an issue.
And the NFL is a harsh business. I liked the guy but the team is going to make moves that shed vet salaries and promote younger, cheaper talent when and where they can.
Hadn't heard that. But yeah, it is a business and shedding salaries where we can afford to is wise. Just such a leader on the team, hope it doesn't affect the culture.
That said, Phillips never made me forget Pat or Linval.
