Implications for Hunter if he holds out

On whose part? I think both sides have legit arguments. But y'know what? We don't even know that there IS an argument.

I sort of think that sometime in late summer Hunter gets a new contract that pays him more in line with his performance. At that point, we'll likely hear that there never was a hold out threat and there never was any unwillingness on the Vikings' part to re-do the deal. So far, all of this is just speculation and hearsay on the parts of b-team reporters and the twit-o-verse. We'll see...
We dont know if he's holding out or if he's just skipping OTA's to continue his rehab, which is fairly common. We dont know if the two are talking about an extension. We dont know if he's going to be 100% healthy and effective like he was prior to the injury. We know our DL sucked and yes missing him was a big part of that but his numbers would have been down last year, IMO, because the other 3 spots were filled by jokes. We don't know if he would miss games due to wanting a new contract.

I for one would like to see it play out and not pay him right now. I want to see how he looks coming off injury and if he looks great in the first 4 games, then yes restructure the deal.

I go along with this line of thinking,  I want to see him for a few games before I would commit long term big money to him,  if you factor in the money he made last year while not playing a snap,  how far off is he actually in terms of annual average from what he thinks he should be making?

I don't know what HE thinks, but he ranks 17th among edge rushers in average per year. I would say he should probably be in the 4-6 range in terms of performance.

But that's not how contracts work. New contracts tend to come in at the top and slowly work themselves down as other new contracts are written. So it wouldn't surprise me if Hunter's new deal puts him at or near the top. Of course, the injury muddies that quite a bit.

I'm fully aware of how contracts work as he was paid $11.5MM last year for not playing because of a serious injury. I just don't have a lot of interest in pay a guy a crap ton of money when he may return and be the 17th best edge rusher next year. Prove it for a few games and go from there.

I'm pretty sure that 17th is in reference to his contract ranking.  Performance pre injury is likely top 3 to 5,  after a year lay off.... how do you set any contact basis without some major injury clause protections which im sure his agent would balk at.

Has there been any indication that he got a clean bill of health? I know he is under contract but there is no honoring it, there is looking for more. I can see both sides. The business and the personal. Hopefully it is sorted out soon.

I don't think there is any way to pay him big money long term without seeing how his play is affected by his injury.  I'd offer to move some future money into this year, as a good faith incentive, and if he hits the incentive renegotiate to give him more money.

I would restructure Hunter's contract as follows:
  • 2021 -- have a games played bonus -- say 50k per game.  Adds almost a million to his contract and protects the team against injury.
  • Add a pro bowl/all pro bonus.  1 mill for pro bowl that is increased to 2 mill for all pro.  Gives him additional $ and again protects the team against injury.
  • Tact the pro bowl bonus/all pro bonus to his next year's salary.  So, his base for the year after he makes pro bowl or all pro is increased accordingly.
Done.  So, if he make all pro in 2021, he would get almost a million for a playing bonus, 2 million for the all pro bonus and a bump of 2 million in salary for 2022.
