KAM presser on McCarthy/Vikings

I think there's a scenario where JJ looks fine in OTAs, Rodgers is still sitting on his hands into the summer, and the Vikings have yet to sign a backup QB. The whole issue is about starter vs. backup. Vikings are not just going to hand Rodgers the starting job. He knows that. But there might come a point where his good options (if you can call them that) run out and the backup job in Minnesota is the best he can do. I think the Vikings would love to have him as a backup. And he would LOVE to play in this offense. So the Vikings are still at the top of his list....likely by mile. If he doesn't sign in Pittsburgh, I could easily see this playing out.

I think if Minnesota doesn't sign him before the season (which I absolutely don't think they will....barring injury), he'll be content sitting and waiting to see if an in-season injury takes out a contender's QB and he's able to step in and chase a chip.  That is the lone scenario that I could see him playing for Minnesota.

I don't buy this 'how JJ looks at OTAs' stuff, it doesn't make any sense. Who looks bad in OTAs? And who wins or loses a starting job in May? Rodgers is going to be a backup in Minnesota when he could have been a starter in New York or Pittsburgh? Ever other rookie started in his class in round 1 and they lived with the lumps. What other top 10 drafted QB ever had to 'compete' for the position? That's a joke. Rodgers will be 42 years old this year, I think this gets lost on some. Do you honestly think Rodgers will be satisfied being a backup in Minnesota or would he just retire? I can't see it. Maybe I'm blind.

Rodgers nor Cousins will not come to Minnesota as a back-up.  They both have expressed that they want starting jobs.

My big takeaway is they seem to be locked on the comp picks already earned and won’t sign someone until after April 29th.

My guess is 26 draft capital is definitely in play to maneuver around the board.

I'm still trying to process if I got anything of substance out of that or not tbh....

Too much time spent on Rogers and KAM's contract status.

I'm with Sticky on this one, I dont know why they are playing coy with JJ being at the top of the QB depth chart...Their reluctance just feeds the beast.

Dude, you're the one who brought up a potential injury to JJ, not me. That's all I meant by that. Sheesh, settle down, Mama McCarthy!

Yes, the Vikings do want to get JJ through OTAs healthy. And yes, I do think Rodgers would have to be willing to take the backup role if he came here. Like I've said a hundred times (and you just said, agreeing with me but in a tone of disagreement), the guy is 41 years old. At some point, if he wants to continue playing, it will have to be for a backup role. I don't know how you can read what I wrote and think I meant something else.

And yes, I think there's a possibility that if he doesn't sign on as a starter somewhere, practically begging for another Jets-like season, he might choose the backup job with the best offense in the NFL. There's a reason the Vikings are his top choice. Am I saying it's likely? Absolutely not. I'm saying it's possible. Because, essentially, that's exactly what the Vikings are saying right now. Don't be so afraid of the truth.

I don't think they're being coy; I think they're being prudent. Declaring JJ the starter before he's played a down sends a message to the team that you don't have to compete for a starting job. It's just a funny game NFL teams play, but every team does it, and the Vikings are no different. For example, most assume Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels were declared starters on draft night. They weren't. Williams wasn't named the starter until after the final preseason game. For Daniels it was the 3rd preseason game. Both well after training camp was over. Was there ever any doubt? Not really, but that's the game they play.

Edit: actually that's wrong about Williams. Eberflus named him the starter before mini camp. But it's true about Daniels.

lol, 'Mama McCarthy' Wink

Listen, if Rodgers can be convinced by his bestie KOC to play backup, sign me up. Just doesn't seem to be Aaron's style. Or temperament. And I do agree with PF the Vikings are being coy, its weird. And a p.s. Kwesi still hasn't signed an extension. Meaning the Wilfs are playing hardball with an amount of money or length of extension, as they should. He's got some proving to do. The ol' 'its not bothering me' thing means exactly that it is bothering him and good on a few reporters to ask a few tough questions.
