I'm sure he wasn't put out there under protest but I'm sure he was feeling the pressure, Zimmer has displayed a penchant for old school rub some dirt on it mentality.  He didn't look like his heart was in it from the start to me.  Maybe it was just uncertainty on his part or he realized how vulnerable he felt once the live action started.
