KFAN Vikings blog: We all love Teddy, but it's time to stop...

We all love Teddy, but it's time to stop...this is Case Keenum's teamI shouldn't have to start this blog out with this caveat, but words no matter how flattering get misconstrued as negative, so let's get it out of the way.
I love Teddy Bridgewater. He's great, he really is. Great in the community, great in the locker room, great with the other quarterbacks, he's great all around and he's probably, maybe the future quarterback of this team.
There, I said it. Now let me say this. Teddy might be the future quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, but that future will not be in the 2017 season. The argument is done, done for the season, this is Case Keenum's team.
It's true, he was brought here to be a backup quarterback. That said, what's he's done on the field this year is pinning Keenum as nothing short of an MVP candidate, let alone the starting quarterback of this team. I'm not kidding either.
Today at U.S. Bank Stadium, Keenum led the Vikings to a win over a really good defense. Heading into the day, the Rams had allowed an average of 18.0 points per game to their opponents on the year. Today, Keenum and the Vikings scored 24 points and it should have been 30 points. Case finished the day completing 71% of his passes, gaining 280 yards and throwing 1 touchdown leading to a 100.8 passer rating on the day and that's not the anomaly.
Keenum has four total games with a passer rating above 100 this season. That's two more 100+ games than Ben Roethlisberger, as many 100+ games as Kirk Cousins, Tom Brady and Russel Wilson to date!

  Uncommon Off-Def balance
Posted by: CLOBIMON - 11-20-2017, 05:44 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (5)

Maybe it's been discussed or mentioned here, during the game or in media and I've missed it, but I just noticed that the Vikings currently have a balance that isn't very common for them.  Through the ten games they're sitting at 5th in both yards gained and yards allowed per game.  That is a ranking for both that they haven't equaled or bettered at the same time for a full season since 1994 when they finished 3rd and 5th respectively.  The only other season since then that's close (and comparable) is the NFCC game season of '09 with 5th and 6th (better in points, worse in points allowed).  Even in '98 they were 2nd and 13th.  The 11-5 '15 season they were 29th and 13th and last season they were 28th and 3rd.

Unfortunately this balance doesn't guarantee a deep run in the playoffs or anything but it must certainly indicate a team that's playing well enough on both sides of the ball to give them a very good chance.

O-line, Case Keenum’s ability to avoid sacks key vs. Rams
Posted by: purplefaithful - 11-20-2017, 02:04 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (4)

When the Minnesota Vikings signed tackles Riley Reiff and Mike Remmers last offseason, the hope was that they would put together a solid offensive line.
Through 10 games, the Vikings’ offensive line hasn’t just been solid, it’s been spectacular. Against a tremendous Los Angeles Rams defensive line, they allowed zero sacks on 38 Case Keenum drop backs in the Vikings’ 24-7 win at US Bank Stadium.
“Thank goodness it’s been the strength of our team this year,” head coach Mike Zimmer said. “I just like their toughness and their mentality and their grit and the way they go about their business. ”
Keenum has only been sacked one time for a 1-yard loss since Week 4 when he was taken down twice by the Detroit Lions. At the center of the offensive line’s excellence is Reiff, who has not given up a sack this season.

Let's bust all myths about Vikings receiver Adam Thielen
Posted by: purplefaithful - 11-20-2017, 01:38 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (15)

Why are defenses not swamping Adam Thielen with double teams and complex coverages? "It's almost like guys don't believe it,'' Vikings cornerback Terence Newman said. Well, believe it. Thielen is a star. The Vikings are 8-2 and positioning themselves to play in January, perhaps even February, in U.S. Bank Stadium, and Thielen is again altering expectations and busting myths.
The caption on his career keeps changing. Division II college athlete. Undrafted long shot at a tryout camp. Special teams contributor. Extra receiver. Starting receiver. Star receiver. And now one of the best receivers in the NFL, and the most productive receiver on one of the league’s best teams.
After making six catches for 123 yards and a touchdown, Thielen has 62 for 916 yards this season. In franchise history, only Randy Moss has produced more receiving yards in the first 10 games of a season.
So why are defenses not swamping him with double teams and complex coverages? Why are we still hearing the same backhanded compliments about his “smarts,’’ and “scrappiness?’’
“It’s almost like guys don’t believe it,’’ Vikings cornerback Terence Newman said.
Why don’t they? “Your guess is as good as mine,’’ Newman said.
The unspoken theory in the Vikings’ locker room is that Thielen falls prey to stereotypes about average-looking white receivers, so everything he accomplishes feels like an upset.
Here’s what is strange about that: Thielen is 6-2 and 200 pounds. He’s plenty fast, as he proved again on Sunday, and he’s quick off the line and when making cuts. He has tremendous body control, which helps him fool defensive backs and make acrobatic catches.

14 for 26 - 7th game this year that he couldn't break 35 yards total. Oh, and Cardinals may have realized they need a passing game to have any chance to win.
