Thursday's Vikings game blitzing some Minnesotans' Thanksgiving dinners
Posted by: purplefaithful - 11-22-2017, 06:11 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (8)

The way people are fretting over Thanksgiving plans, you'd think a massive blizzard was in the forecast.
Nope, it's an 11:30 a.m. Minnesota Vikings game. What's a Minnesotan to do?
OK, so many of us don't eat our turkey until later in the day anyways. But a good number of Minnesotans do plan Thanksgiving dinner mid-day. And this Vikings game is throwing a wrench in the planning.
When will we cook? When will we eat? Will the TV be on?
We conducted a super scientific Twitter poll to see how the game is impacting when people are going to eat their Thanksgiving meal. Click below to see the results.

Look at that fan devotion: Minnesotans willing to starve until after the game is over. Bravo!

Special kudos to the fans willing to stuff their faces in the 15 or so minutes at halftime. Skol!

Vikings' road ahead: Buckle up for a wild finish in the NFC
Posted by: purplefaithful - 11-22-2017, 06:09 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (13)

When Case Keenum and the Vikings were battered in Pittsburgh and limped home at 1-1, the suggestion here was to step away from the upstairs railing, let your talented squad take a few more swings in this highly imperfect league and hold off on Googling “NFL Mock Draft ’18.”
Eight games later, the Vikings are 8-2, winners of six straight and sitting on the second seed in the NFC.
Thanks for coming. Please pay the receptionist on your way out.
The Vikings truly are the second-best team in the NFC behind Philadelphia (9-1). Enjoy the flight, but stay buckled for the unexpected, but inevitable turbulence.
It’s Week 11. There are six more to go. Ask the folks in Dallas, Buffalo, Denver and Green Bay how quickly things change. Or just reach back a year and recall the numbers 5-0 and 3-8.
Week 12 starts with three games on Thanksgiving. As the first one — Vikings at Detroit — nears, the sense is many fans have overcorrected their assumption wheel since that Pittsburgh loss and are rolling end over end toward the ditch on the other side of this winding road to Minneapolis and Super Bowl LII.
Just breathe a bit before locking arms in a statewide “Duck, Duck, Goose Gray Duck!” celebration of a second NFC North title in three years. Let’s all get up Thursday morning and see how things go against a Lions team that has controlled the Vikings more often than not since 2014.
Beat the Lions, and the NFC North lead is three games with five to play. Lose to the Lions for the fourth straight time, and it’s one game with Detroit holding the first tiebreaker and a more favorable schedule.
In other words, no pressure, guys. Before you eat turkey, don’t play like one.
Now here’s a closer look at the 16-team NFC:

Interesting Uni History for our Vikes - some may already know this from going to the new stadium's exhibit about this - but for those that don't know how or where our vikings horned helmet and Norseman Logo came from check this link out!

OT: coaching my girls 10U Hockey Team and...
Posted by: Mike Olson - 11-22-2017, 04:32 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (6)

Allow me this indulgence and proud father moment...

Coaching my girls 10U Hockey Team and we got our first victory in our first game and my first game ever coaching.

With :26 seconds left in the game our girls (Edina 10U) went up 2-1 over Minnetonka Black to beat a team that we never bested last year.

We let the first goal in and our goalie broke down in tears. I had to coach her back to the net reminding her that there will be more goals scored against us this year and that we would score goals to back her up too. She didn't let in another goal the remainder of the game despite us being outshot by about 2-1. Each of our goals came from a rebound put in by a girl in position or by a pass from the corner to a girl in position..... Which as a coach is much more gratifying than watching a girl skate coast to coast and scoring.

They executed the breakout of our own zone flawlessly again and again. Man I know it seems strange to get excited over a 10U girls hockey game... But wow that was soooo much fun.

What percent chance do the Vikings have of winning out and going 14-2

I was just thinking about this and I am going to predict this team wins out.  14-2 with a first round bye.

Vikings struggle to score – and win – against Detroit Lions in Mike Zimmer era
Posted by: purplefaithful - 11-22-2017, 04:28 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (2)

Puzzle all you want about the Vikings’ 2-5 record against the Detroit Lions since 2014, over how two aggravating losses against the Lions were all that kept the Vikings from wresting a playoff berth from the tumult of their 2016 season, and then consider this:
It’s awfully hard to win games consistently when you average 15.3 points.
That’s been the Vikings’ scoring rate against the Lions in the Mike Zimmer era, dating to a 17-3 loss where Teddy Bridgewater was sacked eight times in an Oct. 12, 2014, meeting. The Vikings’ only two wins over the Lions came in 2015 and were also the only games where they’ve scored more than 17 points. Last year, they managed just 16 against Detroit before losing in overtime at U.S. Bank Stadium, and mustered only 13 three weeks later in a Thanksgiving Day loss.
Last month, a week after Case Keenum won NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors for his performance against Tampa Bay, the Vikings scored just one touchdown in a 14-7 loss at home.
That game still stands as the Vikings’ most recent defeat, and if they’re going to put themselves in command of the NFC North with a Thanksgiving Day win at Ford Field this year, they’ll have to solve a Lions defense that hasn’t given them much.

The 6 flags of Case Keenum

A very fair article on Keenum.  He even critques himself on that one poor decision to throw to a well covered Thielen in the endzone.  Someone else was open on a shallow cross and could have picked up the first.

One interesting tidbit that hadn't seen before

Quote:And while Keenum has landed four of six long bombs over 40 yards, but
his throws between 20-40 have not gone particularly well. He’s completed
just 6-of-21 throws with two interceptions and a 38.7 rating on
downfield tosses. By the way, Brett Favre had a rating of 119.3 on
throws between 21-30 and 106.3 on throws between 31-40 yards in 2009.
