Panthers hold ideal trade chip for WR

Panthers hold ideal trade chip to solve Vikings’ WR need in the form of a familiar face, creating a rare win-win scenario for both sides
The Vikings are reportedly looking for a wide receiver on the trade market and the Panthers just so happen to have the perfect fit.

The Minnesota Vikings are reportedly in the market for a veteran wide receiver. The team’s running mate for Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, will miss the start of the season due to a suspension. The Carolina Panthers may have just the thing to help in the form of a familiar face.

Carolina’s wide receiver room has undergone a transformation in recent years and now boasts a number of talented youngsters who should be given the bulk of the work at wide receiver. This would allow third-year quarterback Bryce Young to establish valuable rapport with possible long-term solutions at the position.

And that means that former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen could be the perfect trade candidate for Carolina to offer up.

The Panthers should offer Adam Thielen to Minnesota in a trade package

Thielen agreed to a restructured contract with Carolina earlier this offseason, paying him a $1.5 million roster bonus in March and leaving $6.25 million in base salary left to be paid throughout the rest of the season. It makes him a fairly digestible contract to onboard for a team looking to acquire his services. Minnesota is currently listed at OverTheCap as having in excess of $26 million in cap space for the 2025 season.

A reunion between the two sides would take Thielen back to the place in which he got his footing as an NFL receiver. He played the first nine seasons of his NFL career with the Vikings and posted over 500 receptions and nearly 6,700 receiving yards over that stretch before leaving to play in Carolina via free agency in 2023.

A receiver like Thielen, in the later stages of his career, would make some sense for the Vikings given that they’re looking for a bridge to survive until Addison is able to return from his three-game suspension — acquiring him would presumably come at a modest trade value cost. For Carolina, his departure would further open the door for names such as Tetairoa McMillan, Xavier Legette, Jalen Coker, and others to all see incrementally more targets from Young. Given the Panthers are trying to fortify their future outlook on offense, sharing as much time on task with the young nucleus should be the priority anyway.

So, Minnesota, give the Panthers a call. And if the phone does indeed ring, the Panthers should be ready to pick up the phone and play ball on a trade.

OT: Tarantino reveals his own best and favorite movie...
Posted by: purplefaithful - 08-19-2025, 05:12 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (8)

Hollywood filmmaker Quentin Tarantino has revealed which of his movies he thinks is the best – and it’s probably not the one you’d expect.

The American director has two Academy Awards to his name: one for the screenplay of “Pulp Fiction” in 1994 and another for the screenplay of “Django Unchained” 18 years later.

But neither is what he considers to be his best – or even his favorite – movie.

Rather, he says 2009’s “Inglourious Basterds” is his best piece of work, while his favorite is his most recent feature film “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.”

He made the comments during an interview with “The Church of Tarantino” podcast in an episode released on Friday.

Asked to reveal which of his movies he loves the most, the 62-year-old said: “‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’ is my favorite, ‘Inglourious Basterds’ is my best, but I think ‘Kill Bill’ is the ultimate Quentin movie, like nobody else could have made it.”

Set in Nazi-occupied France and starring Brad Pitt and Christoph Waltz, “Inglourious Basterds” follows the exploits of a group of American Jewish soldiers who plan to assassinate Nazi leaders.

Tarantino went on to say that “every aspect” of his two-volume “Kill Bill” story, which sees Uma Thurman star as a former assassin hellbent on vengeance after waking from a coma, was taken from his imagination, loves and passions.

“So I think ‘Kill Bill’ is the movie I was born to make. I think ‘Inglourious Basterds’ is my masterpiece but ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’ is my favorite,” he said.

Some of his output also came in for criticism.

When asked if there was anything he would change, Tarantino said he “miscalculated a couple of things along the way.”

“The only thing that bites my a** is just a few little shots in both ‘Reservoir Dogs’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’,” he said, adding that both featured some “amateur sh*t.”

While he “loves” both movies, he said they were made early in his career when “I didn’t know what I didn’t know.” He said he didn’t want to point out his mistakes, but mentioned equipment in a shot, the shadow of a boom and the mark of an X where the actors should have been standing. “It takes you at least two movies to figure out how to do it,” he joked.

During the interview, Tarantino said his latest project, “The Adventures of Cliff Booth,” a follow up to “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” has just started filming.

“One Upon a Time… in Hollywood” starred Leonardo DiCaprio as fading TV actor Rick Dalton, while his stunt double Cliff Booth was portrayed by Pitt. Together, they try to recapture their success and fame.

Tarantino previously told CNN that the next movie he directs would be his last. It had been rumored that this would be a script called “The Movie Critic” but he scrapped the idea last year.

Explaining why, he said he lost interest in bringing the story to the big screen. “I pulled the plug on it,” he said.

“I was so excited about the writing but I wasn’t really that excited about dramatizing what I wrote once we were in pre-production, partly because I’m using the skill set that I learned from ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,’” he said, adding that “The Movie Critic” would have been set in a similar place and time.

Still no Van Ginkel (since 8/7)
Posted by: purplefaithful - 08-19-2025, 04:30 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (3)

Or Harry....

The Vikings were once again without outside linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel and safety Harrison Smith at practice.

Van Ginkel has been present at practices but in street clothes since Aug. 7; his injury is unknown. Smith has been absent from practices since Aug. 11 with what O’Connell said Aug. 13 is an illness.

The Vikings also missed defensive lineman Levi Drake Rodriguez (ankle) and Tyler Batty (wrist) on Monday. Both were present but did not participate. Batty did do pre-practice walk-throughs.

7 WRs that make the most sense
Posted by: Montana Tom - 08-19-2025, 03:31 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (11)

Seven wide receivers who make the most sense for the depleted Vikings

Odell Beckham Jr.
Beckham won a Super Bowl in O’Connell’s offense with the Rams in 2021, but he turns 33 in November and he hasn’t had a truly productive season since 2021. Even that season was marginal for his standards as he finished with 44 receptions for 537 yards and five touchdowns — and then scored twice in the playoffs.

Amari Cooper
The 31-year-old had 44 catches for 547 yards and four touchdowns between the Browns and Bills last season. He made the Pro Bowl in 2023 with Cleveland and he still has some gas in the tank after racking up 711 catches and more than 10,000 yards in his career. In Minnesota, he’d take a back seat to Jefferson and Addison. Is that a role that he would entertain?

Gabe Davis
Davis is only 26 and his track record is impressive outside of his 2024 season with the Jaguars when he posted career lows with 20 catches for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Why the struggles in his first season with Jacksonville? He’s on record saying he played hurt with a meniscus injury before it knocked him out for good after 10 games.

If he’s healthy, he could get back to the form that saw him score 27 touchdowns in four seasons with Buffalo. Would he take a one-year deal to reignite his career with the Vikings? Like Cooper, he would play third fiddle behind Jefferson and Addison, which would likely limit his ability to command as much money as possible as a free agent next spring.

Four others...
Tyler Boyd
Brandon Powell
Adam Thielen
Cordarrelle Patterson

Why did we just sign 2 offensive players at this stage?
Posted by: Montana Tom - 08-19-2025, 02:58 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (3)

Inquiring minds want to know, particularly how to pronounce the new RB's name.
===

The Vikings officially announced the addition of two offensive players on Tuesday. They've signed running back Xazavian Valladay and offensive lineman Zack Bailey. Linebacker Max Tooley, who was just brought back last week, was waived again to make room on the 90-man roster.

Valladay, whose signing with Minnesota was reported on Monday evening, gives the Vikings a running back who can perhaps play some significant snaps in Friday night's preseason finale against the Titans in Nashville. He had a prolific career at Wyoming and Arizona State from 2018 to 2022, racking up over 5,300 yards from scrimmage and 39 touchdown in 54 games. He set career highs with 1,481 yards and 18 touchdowns as a fifth-year senior at ASU.

Since going undrafted in 2023, Valladay has had brief stints with the Texans, Steelers, Jets, and Saints. The 27-year-old appeared in one regular season game with the Jets in 2023, only on special teams. He caught six passes for 62 yards in a preseason game with New York last year.

Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason won't play in Friday's game. It's also possible the Vikings feel like they've seen enough from Ty Chandler and Zavier Scott, who are competing for the No. 3 running back role on the 53-man roster. Thus, Valladay joins rookie Tre Stewart as another RB who the Vikings can use on Friday if they feel inclined.

Bailey, 29, is a journeyman offensive lineman who has been on Minnesota's roster before. After going undrafted out of South Carolina in 2019, he landed with the Buccaneers and then signed with the Vikings' practice squad in December 2020. He stuck around in Minnesota until the following October. Bailey has also had stints with the Colts, Commanders, Chargers, Falcons, and Jets. He's played in two regular season games.

Listed at 6'5" and 315 pounds, Bailey can play several spots along the offensive line.

These two moves are probably just to give the Vikings a couple fresh bodies for their third preseason game this weekend. In addition to Valladay, Bailey could see some time in the game if there's another offensive lineman the Vikings want to keep on the sideline for whatever reason. The best-case scenario for Valladay and Bailey would be to stick around on the practice squad after roster cuts next week, but even that is probably a long shot.

Daniel Jones named starter in Indy

I think this is good for our comp formula, is it not? Also, many speculating that AR will be with another team by week one. Can KOC fix him?

  McCarthy's Debut
Posted by: StickierBuns - 08-19-2025, 05:26 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (22)

I think Viking's fans need to keep in mind that this is not only JJ's first NFL start upcoming, but he went a long period last year where he couldn't even throw a football because of the knee recovery. He's doing a great job of making up for lost time, but the fact remains there's catching up to do and a limited time to get there. Pluses are that he knows the offense ins and outs, is handling the huddle and line of scrimmage well and doesn't lack in ability or confidence. But he'll be learning a lot when the bullets are live. His accuracy I think will be a work in progress and will get incrementally better as the season progresses. He's going to rely on his feet a bit more than KOC will like, but that's how athletic QBs rookies do it: look at Drake Maye, Caleb and Jayden. Vrabel said he wants Maye running much less this year.

Its not always going to look smooth. He's not always going to be the most efficient. He'll probably be more playmaker than pocket passer the first 5 to 7 games. But everyone will see the potential, the high upside and some eye-opening athletic plays. Just hang in there, there'll be a learning curve. I think to expect otherwise is to not look at the realities of the circumstance and situation. But he's got a great supporting cast and smart coaches.
