Iowa woman dies after explosion at gender reveal party

Associated PressOctober 27, 2019 — 1:29pm
KNOXVILLE, Iowa — An Iowa woman has died after an explosion at a gender reveal party created debris that hit her.
The Marion County Sheriff's office says the explosion happened at a home in central Iowa around 4 p.m. Saturday during a party to announce the gender of a baby a couple is expecting.
Deputies arrived at the home in Knoxville to find a 56-year-old woman dead. Knoxville is about 40 miles southeast of Des Moines.
Investigators determined that an explosion during the gender reveal announcement caused the woman's death.
No other details about the explosion were available. The victim's name wasn't immediately released.

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!

Definitely tragic, but wtf? If you've got enough explosive to kill...

Sheriff: Gender reveal party explosion was stunt gone awry

Associated PressOctober 28, 2019 — 4:25pm
KNOXVILLE, Iowa — Authorities say an Iowa family's attempt at a gender reveal party for a soon-to-be-born baby went horribly wrong when a homemade device that was meant to discharge colored powder instead exploded like a pipe bomb, killing a 56-year-old relative.
The Marion County Sheriff's office said Pamela Kreimeyer died instantly when debris struck her head Saturday before flying another 432 feet (132 meters) and landing in a nearby field in rural Knoxville, about 35 miles (56 kilometers) southeast of Des Moines.
Kreimeyer was 45 feet (14 meters) from the device when it exploded.
Family members had been experimenting with explosives in the hopes of posting a colorful announcement on social media, authorities said. They welded a metal cylinder to a stand and packed it with gunpowder that they thought would send the colored baby powder aloft. But authorities say tape covering the top of the cylinder caused it to detonate like a pipe bomb.
Law enforcement officials expressed condolences to the family and warned about the dangers of using explosive materials.
"This family got together for what they thought was going to be a happy event with no intent for anyone to get hurt," Sheriff Jason Sandholdt said in a statement. "What ended up happening was that Pamela Kreimeyer, a wife, mother and grandmother, was killed by a piece of metal where a metal stand gunpowder and colored powder were involved. This is a reminder that anytime someone mixes these things there is a high potential for serious injury or death."
Using explosives to reveal a baby's gender is rare, but a similar incident caused a major wildfire in Arizona in 2017 , when an off-duty border patrol agent accidentally set off a blaze that burned 73 square miles (189 square kilometers) of mostly Forest Service land.
The blaze forced about 200 people out of their homes and cost an estimated $8 million in damage and firefighting expenses. The agent, Dennis Dickey, fired a rifle at a homemade target that exploded, sending a blue substance into the air. The explosion started a grassfire that spread quickly.
Dickey pleaded guilty in September 2018 to a federal misdemeanor charge of starting a fire without a permit. He was sentenced the following month to five years of probation and was ordered to make an initial payment of $100,000 in restitution and monthly payments of $500.

What the hell is wrong with people? Seriously? It says they were experimenting with explosives. No just no don't do that. So sad for her family.

I have a thermonuclear device and some blue and pink baby powder that I’m saving for when I become a grandfather. It’s going to be epic.

Do you think gender reveal parties are going to fade away fast since lots of folks are going to let their kids decide later on what gender they are?  I'm kind of old fashioned myself...I have a daughter which she is a "Girl" and a son whom happens to be a "Boy".  Pretty simple...I think people are just plain stupid today.  IMO.

People have been stupid for eons now lol! I am proud to say I have a beautiful, gender neutral child and the world is better for them being here.

At least for me? The world isn't black/white and how its been.

I know its not like that for everyone, I'm cool with that too.

Explosion reported at 2nd Iowa gender reveal party

Associated PressOctober 29, 2019 — 1:10pm
WAUKEE, Iowa — Authorities are investigating another explosion at an Iowa gender reveal party that happened one day after a blast at a similar gathering killed a 56-year-old woman in a nearby community.
Authorities say no one was injured in the explosion Sunday in rural Waukee, a Des Moines suburb, but they are looking into unconfirmed claims that the blast broke a neighbor's windows.
Waukee Fire Capt. Tomme Tysdal says the Waukee explosion came from a commercially available gender reveal kit, unlike the homemade device that killed Pamela Kreimeyer on Saturday near Knoxville, a town 45 miles (74 kilometers) away.
Authorities say Kreimeyer died instantly when her family's device exploded, hitting her in the head from 45 feet (14 meters) away.
Gender reveal parties with attention-grabbing efforts such as explosives have become increasingly common nationally and popular on social media.

Well, Suzie, she died in an explosion that was to tell everyone if you were going to be a boy or girl.

So you see, honey, it was all your fault.

Gender reveal stunt led to plane crash in Texas

(CNN) — Another gender reveal stunt went horribly wrong and caused the recent plane crash in Texas, according to a National Transportation Safety Board accident report released Friday.
The pilot was flying a plane at a low altitude on September 7 as part of an elaborate gender reveal for a friend, according to the report.
The pilot dumped 350 gallons of pink water from the plane, but the plane was "too low" and immediately stalled. The pilot was not injured in the crash in Turkey, Texas, about 100 miles southeast of Amarillo, The plane's other passenger had minor injuries. The plane was designed to carry only one person, the report said.
This incident was the latest in a string of gender reveal stunts gone awry.
