Several thoughts:
1. Jaleel Johnson and Jalyn Holmes haven't shown Zimmer enough and he feels he needs Hercules and Watts as insurance. And doesn't care about O-Line depth.

2. In the Coaching Staff's view Edison is close enough to Jones production-wise and isn't costing the team a roster spot or the same level of cap hit.

3. Dakota Dozier is ready to step in at LG and Stefanski, Kubiak and Dennison feel like that's their best 5 if Bradbury goes down.

4. They already sent Garrett to Siberia for some Rocky 5 style training and have determined that he's unbreakable.

I think #1 is the most likely followed closely by #3. Not ruling out #4 after what I saw Bradbury do against Dextet Lawrence and Christian Wilkins, though.

Johnson and Holmes are the head scratchers here,  neither have made any sort of splash yet there they are again.  I was betting one or both would have been replaced with cast offs from some other team at cut down time last weekend.  Our DT situation is somewhat concerning IMO.

One possibility:  The Vikes will re-sign Jones after the first game (I believe as a veteran if he is on the roster for the first game, his salary is guaranteed for the entire year).  The Vikes will cut Boyd at that time and move him to the PS.  That would make sense to me.

Good call.  I would prefer if they moved Watts to the practice squad...

Valuable O-line depth?  Jones never saw the field last year with a even worse O-line than this year.  At least Doctson is a slight improvement over Treadwell.  What could Jones offer?
"Depth has long been an issue up front for the Vikings but they should feel good about having Brett Jones as their backup C/G. Not only has he put together decent PFF grades in the past as a starter, he’s been dominating — yes, dominating — this preseason. He is the only Viking with a grade above 90 and scored exceptionally well in run and pass blocking. That doesn’t mean he should steal anyone’s job. It’s just to say that he’s solid, proven depth if someone goes down."  https://www.skornorth.com/vikings-2/2019/08/what-do-pffs-stats-tell-us-about-the-vikings-first-two-preseason-games/

I think we have now learned that Zim gives a rat's ass about PFF grading and individual performance during the preseason.

He started at center the final 3 games last season because of desperation not because of his talent.  He appeared on a few other games on special teams.  He graded well according to PFF while playing against 2's and 3's in the preseason against vanilla defenses.  I would hardly call him dominating.  Elfflien can move over to center in case of injury and be better than Jones.

Yes, it is about playing the best 5 more than avoiding disruption.  Elf was a good center his rookie year.  I would much rather have him there than Berger-lite.

I would need to see Elf return to his rookie self.   he was weak last year and hasnt really shown all that dominating at OG thus far this year.  I am going to forget last year coming back from the injury,  but he needs to get back to his rookie year ways or he will be on the outside looking in with these other OGs waiting in the wings.  Elf gets zero push and is often rag dolled in pass pro.

Something else to keep in mind: it was the jackwagons coaching the O-Line and that schizophrenic OC that left Jones on the bench in favor of caca like Compton & Remmers last year.

And Jones was brought back AFTER Kubiak & Dennison came on board. I'm guessing Kevin and Gary & Rick saw something they liked out of the veteran to give him a spot all the way through the final cut down.

So let's not act like Jones was a steaming turd they inherited. The new Offensive Coaches wanted him back. Which makes this move confusing unless they already have a secret handshake to sign him back after Week 1.

Please dont bring up the ghosts of vikings past by saying an OL player was “good his rookie year”. It pains my heart just to hear those words.

I was mildly surprised Jaleel made the 53. I thought he was right on the line and Watts had beat him out on preseason play. I don't think Watts would have made it through waivers unclaimed FWIW so I think that necessitated him staying on the roster. I also think they want to retain Hercules potential since he will be a matchup nightmare if he can gain a bit more weight.

I really don't know what to think about Jalyn Holmes since I think he is too stiff. Which is why they moved him inside to 3-tech. But he does have untapped potential and the coaching staff seems to like that.

So why not cut an RB so Zim can keep his treasure trove of underperforming DTs? Not seeing the logic behind cutting valuable veteran depth in the O-Line.

Because our best RB is often injured??  As much as we'd like to think RBs grow on trees Abdullah would have been picked up by someone.  It was a no brainer on Matison and Boone.

so we still have 2 more before we would need Abdullah and we have Ham who can take snaps at RB and Blasingame on the PS,  imgaine Blasingame and Ham in at the same time.
