10 out of 12 Viking's draft picks make roster

Not really sure.  Some of it is probably due to managing cap space.  There was a necessary turnover of the roster and going into the draft we knew they had to be successful with a number of picks to fill holes.  

We won’t know for a year or two for sure.

The team got younger for sure...

IMO the Vikes weren't getting players developing in the bottom of the roster. 

by drafting 12 players, the Vikings staff  got the  competition they wanted and  have new players in the incubator.  

Yeah I'm probably over optimistic but at least we'll see that now camp is over if they can be developed.

Drafting 12 and keeping 2 or 3 means you paid more attention to the Kipers of the world than trusting your own personnel.

in todays NFL with so little practice time allowed by the CBA there is really little time to develop players.   The starters get the bulk of the snaps,  the 2nds eat up most of the rest of those snaps and those that are left are used to run the scout team so they arent really working on their own O or D, they get reps and get coached up a little I am sure,   but the days of finding the next Johnny Randle or Tom Brady are likely in the rear view mirror in most cases since the union wont allow it, and with the veteran money escalator the unproven guys are much cheaper than developing a guy over the course of more than a couple years.

Guys that are complete always get found. Adam was an undrafted free agent and has shined. Guys have to be good in practice, preseason, meeting rooms and elsewhere, or they don't rise. The vikings have done very well adding undrafted or low drafted players, but they need to be the complete package, or they aren't going to get the 2nd team reps.......Mike Boone, Holton Hill, Mata'afa all come to mind.

Weren't several of your examples also cut at least once in their career including Theilen?  So what does that do for your arguement that the coaches know best all the time?

Again,  you are painting yourself into a corner by refusing to consider that the coaches may not always make the best decisions,  but what ever.

Several guys get cut in their first go around, as they just weren't ready or complete players yet. College offenses can be so different from pro sets, it may take a year or two or team or two to catch on. The players weren't ready, so the coach was right at that time. It's not hard to figure out.

You make it sound like because of the union, none of these guys will get found. I say they will if they can learn the playbook and become more complete players, they will eventually get an opportunity. Now when they do, the coach is right again.

I trust the coaches and GM's who get paid millions to evaluate talent more than a guy living in his mom's basement.

I'm not sure how to answer the question.  But one concern I have is that the team SEEMS to fall in love with the guys that they draft (or want to draft).  And then they can't get over it.  So not only do we keep most of our draft picks, we also go out and pick up guys from the waiver wire that we had previously scouted and wanted (Doctson, Fields... and someone else that escapes me right now).

Yeah, I think it's an intentional strategy. They've done a good job of retaining their stars, but that comes at the cost of squeezing out cap room for depth players. You would also hope that after several years in a system, at least on defense, that the coaches and front office are pretty dialed in on what type of players fit, so it might be easier to find value players to fill out the roster than it was in year 1 under Zimmer. Still though the lack of experience and some questionable depth at positions like CB and WR are concerns, but it's cost of building a good team.

I said it because your argument reminds me of a guy living in his mom's basement. You have a common theme, that these highly talented players don't get a shot with 1's or 2's......but the ones that don't are incomplete players that need to develop. I see a lot of undrafted free agents in the league. Somehow, they got found. Why, because they showed up, worked hard, learned the playbook, practiced well when called upon and succeeded in understanding what was expected of them in meeting rooms. Then, they get a shot to prove it on the field.

Complete players usually find a spot on the team, as long as they are talented and are complete in practice and meeting rooms and whatever else is needed for their position). Sometimes it means playing practice squad to keep developing. to get to the practice squad, they have to be cut first, clear waivers then sign. 

I always like the success stories of the undrafted guys. Seems like they work a little harder, probably because they didn't have the success in college. 

Your fighting a battle you lost Sunday when not one team claimed Sloter off waivers. You can say PA is full of crap, a shill for the team. But what he said mimicked what the coaches said....that Sloter was way behind the whole QB room in practice and the meeting room. He didn't progress, the team told anyone who would listen why, yet you refused to listen, and still refuse to listen and that reminds me of the typical guy that still lives in his mom's basement.

Time to move on. You can still stay dug in that Sloter didn't get a chance, but 32 teams passed on this great talent when he was available, that tells me that the guys thinking Sloter got jobbed here were wrong. He just didn't improve in all aspects of the game.

nah, I thought it was pretty lame for a 3rd string QB to be self promoting like that.  again,  not that interested in Sloter per say,  just wanting to see players get opportunities when they present well in games.  even against scrubs in meaningless preseason games.
