You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it. — Robin Williams

This is what I'm talking about: Now the Panthers are potentially screwed. For what? A preseason game.

It's the League's own fault. As the rules have trended towards favoring the passing game and more scoring, the value of QB's     have increased disproportionally. There are literally only 15-20 people on the planet who are capable of playing the position at  a     high level. So the NFL keeps changing rules to protect the 15-20 and everyone whines when one gets hurt.     When a starter at any other position gets injured, it can be a loss for sure, but the blow to the team is not usually nearly as severe.

I think 4 preseason games are ludicrous. Always have felt that way.

Expand the rosters, cut-back to 2 PS games...Go to 18 Reg Season games.

There, problem fixed? But they have to expand rosters to take pressure off the players with 18 reg season games...

But it wont,  the pressure to win those extra 2 games will be the same as it currently is for the 16 we have and the teams will push their starters that much more.  Leave it as it is and if they want more revenue expand the playoffs.   Teams are choosing to limit their starters already so they are taking the load off already.

I do think they need to expand the rosters though.

Or shit happens.  If there were only 2 preseason games, this would have been week one and they would be screwed anyway.

Injuries have always occurred and will continue to do so...OTA's, training camp, pre-season, regular season or playoffs.  It's a violent game and unless you play flag football (which I still predict will be the way QB's of the near future will be "protected"), any QB, but especially a running one, will always be exposed to more risk.

The larger issue is closer to the point muydnbejydk stated and that is the disproportionate value a Brady, Rodgers, Newton mean to their team.  A LB or O lineman goes down and it's "next man up".  But these faces of the team go down and the discussion is about "let's change how a QB is tackled".  Every position is expected to have quality depth but few teams want to pay backup QB's what they may ultimately be worth.

Part of the problem is how rookie QB's are brought into the league.  No one expects these days for a Kyler Murray to sit behind a starter for 2 or three years learning the nuances of the NFL QB position and so pay him accordingly. But the quality drops off dramatically between a starter and their backups.  If he gets injured in the first game of the season, they'll be giving away Cardinals tickets with every In-N-Out burger purchase if Brett Hundley takes over!

All the commentators and players I hear say, "No way will we accept an 18 game season". But the owners will dangle something like an extra 2% of TV revenues to the salary cap and the players will give in.

This.

Lamar Miller tore his ACL on his first touch of the preseason last night.

Would people feel any better about it if it was the first play of the regular season instead? No.

Injuries are an unfortunate reality, and cutting down preseason won't make much difference.

Also, how many saw that play? Newton held the ball for 6-7 seconds! I love his competitiveness, but he needs to understand when to throw the ball away or simply go down, especially in the preseason. Newton is a veteran, who has spent plenty of time banged up! Simply put, he has to be smarter.
