Pretty consistent on 60 yards. He was able to pin a couple inside the 5. His kicks are very high. Good hang time. The crowd is happy.

coffin corner or monster hang time are crucial if he is landing them inside the 10, a touch back is better than a big return, but in this day and age 10-15 yards of field position is huge, especially if that 10-15 is inside the opponents 20 in terms of their starting field position.
From what I've heard on Twitter, interviews, etc. is that he is winning both jobs (he's already the kickoff guy). Whether they give him that opportunity remains to be seen tho. It hasn't happened since Frank Corral in '82.
Zimmer seems skeptical that a player could do both from a load-management perspective, but I say why not? I manage two jobs, two twins, two exes, two houses, two cars and two incontinent calico cats. All he does is kick a piece of leather up and down the field 6 months out of the year. It's not like he has to memorize a playbook or anything.
And if he CAN do it? And does each in the top half of the NFL, then that 5th rounder was a damn bargain.

Given Zim's track record with kickers, I don't think we need to put the pressure of both jobs on him this year. Let the kid punt, kick off and try the occasional bomb of a 60+ yard FG attempt. And let Bailey deal with the other stuff, including the pressure from the HC.
Besides, we'd then have to find a position player to take reps as holder. I know they've been experimenting with Thielen and a couple other WRs, but I'd hate to see one of those guys get blown up on an attempt to block a FG or PAT.

typically the kicker is the back up punter and vice versa, whats the fall back plan if you are only carrying 1 guy? AT is likely the best athlete on the team, perhaps he should be working with VedVIKE?

I think our ST coordinator was the one that raised the issue whether one guy can handle the load. He laughed that the other coaches would love to use that roster spot.
I personally don't have an issue with going with one guy. If he can do the job, then go for it. Keeps him more involved and in the game.

I think that situation is the most likely, Mark. But what happens if Vedvik goes 90% the rest of summer and Bailey continues at, say, a 65% pace? Which is where he was before he suddenly made 7 out of 7 the other day. Do you still keep Bailey for the shorter kicks? For what reason? It wouldn't bring any sort of "peace of mind" to have your less accurate kicker come in and try to win a game with a chip shot, regardless of how experienced he is. And then the whole thing could potentially turn into every coach's nightmare...a QB controversy of sorts.

I think it would be great as well, but they better have somebody that for sure will be active and relatively injury free history to be able to step in and be serviceable. I vote AT. if kickers are usually the best golfers on the team why wouldnt a great golfer make a good kicker? AT was a state golf champ IIRC in HS so giddy up.
Another thought, if you go with one guy, who is the backup for emergency purposes?

I always thought kickers were great golfers because they didn't have much else to do so they spend the offseason on the golf course.Who knows, maybe sloter could be backup punter? He is already HOF backup QB material...
Tired of hearing about giving up a 5th Rounder for the kid.
What Rick gave up was a pick he'd turn into 3 7th Round picks, one of which would be an Aruna or All Vowels-type and the others woukd end up on the PS.
To me that's a damn small price to pay for the potential of better kick-offs, punts and maybe even FGs.
