Hopefully it motivated him to get his head out.

why wouldn't they keep him?  It costs them nothing.  He has talent and that gives guys more chances.  It isn't like he is an embarrassment to the team, just some substance issues that hopefully he will learn his lesson.

With Hughes' return date still a mystery and how well he'll play even more so, having Hill back for the last half of the season could be important.

He's extremely talented and I think Minnesota is just going to bite the bullet and ride out his suspension.

Well, short term answer is we lack depth currently at CB with Hughes out and Hill unavailable for half the season. It will cost us a roster spot. He won't be able to practice with the team, so when he's available Week 9, he probably won't be in game shape or have enough practice reps at best for another full two weeks if not longer. So, for all intents and purposes, he's gone for 12 games.

Long term answer is he's a now thrice proven fuck up. Talented as he is, he just doesn't seem interested, motivated, or just smart enough to do what is necessary to stay on the field. He's shaping up as Wizzinator 2.0. He'll ultimately disappoint...

I don’t think it will cost us a roster spot until suspension is over. At that point either add him to the roster or cut him. if nothing else he will be mid season insurance.

This!

Why wouldn't you ride it out.  We dont know what the DB situation will be mid way through the season and if nothing else we might be in a position to trade away a player for say a fifth round pick and add him then or maybe get that 4th bn rounder for Hill himself.

If this is true, than it's the route to go...

When a guy is suspended, it doesn't cost us a roster spot.  As BrickVike said, it will be like finding a solid street FA in the middle of the year that knows our system.

Whether he can stay clean and take advantage of that opportunity remains to be seen.  But either way, there is no cost to the Vikings for holding onto him.

He'll go on the reserve-suspended list until week 9 and wont count toward the 53.  Week 9 someone will need to be fired to open up a spot for him.

You are 100% right. I was thinking he would have to be on the final 53 before going to the suspension list.

Unfortunately it's looking more and more like Hughes will be out about half the season too.

First half might get ugly but if both Hill and Hughes can come back and play well during our late season run of NFCN games, that would be a huge boost.
