After Friday, I won't be around the Longship as regularly.  In February we sold our house in So. Cal, and bought a place on Maui. Our daughter is going to start college there, then transfer to UH Manoa on Oahu. We fly out from San Diego with our four pups on Monday, our crate and cars just got there, so probably be doing a lot to put the house / furniture in order for a few weeks. I have a couple more years until I can retire, so I'm renting a room near the HS I teach, and will fly back as often as I can, but the deal we got on a gorgeous home on the Maui Lani dunes golf course prompted our sale / purchase.

I know what you're thinking.....but here's what you need to know: Gasoline, sales tax, state taxes, water, sewage, garbage, vehicle registration, property taxes, and even the house we bought is LESS in Maui than California.  Frankly, we've been taxed to death in California, combined with the money we spend to go to Hawaii two or three times a year (and my wife crying every flight back) it just makes the most sense for us to change our lifestyle for our "golden years".  I was born, raised, educated, worked in Riverside my whole life....I'll be damned if I'm gonna die there too.

Anyway, after Friday, I'll pop in from time to time to see what's up, but not with my typical frequency.  So if anyone asks, "Where's Vanguard".....Gone surfing.

Grats Vanguard, i am looking forward to the time I can move out of Cali.  Not only is this state bass ackwards in its policies it also is way to damn expensive to retire here.

Beautiful. We just went to Maui in April for the first time. Loved it. The Big Island is like our 2nd home....we go usually every year......but absolutely loved Maui. Enjoy yourself. Say "hello" to Mick Fleetwood, Kris Kristofferson, Steven Tyler, Weird Al, Don Nelson, etc for us. Aloha Vanguard.

Im officially jealous and happy for you Vanguard! Just checked out your new golf course home online and it looks amazing. What a great way to enjoy retirement. I live in No-Cal and know the feeling of be crushed by taxes, price of gas and housing.
Flying back from Maui for the next two years will probably be the toughest thing - going from paradise to concrete jungle. I see you leaving work after one year! LOL!
One question - you getting new Golf Clubs to play at the Maui Lani dunes golf course?

1:00 PM start there translates to what 8:00 AM in Hawaii?

Too early for beer.
A Mai Tai or Blue Hawaiian....Oh Hell No.

Hercules went to Lahinaluna.  (Best football program on Maui)  My son will be headed to either Baldwin HS or Maui HS.
I've already signed him up for pop warner - He's going from an "Orangecrest Wolves" to "Kahului Ali'i".  They also have a
football program for 8th graders heading into high school...a transitional league called "Big Boyz"

(Sorry, picture wouldn't shrink to a "reasonable" level)

games dont start at 1pm... unless you are on the east coast.  12 central subtract 5 hours... set your alarm for 6:30 brother so you got time to get the coffee started before the game.

Good for you VG.  Will miss you around here, but glad you are getting to pursue your dream.  Sad that taxes are lower in HI than in CA, but very happy you are making it work out for your family.

Actually LOVE my clubs. I've tried everything from Wilson Staff, tot Tileist DCI's with rifle shafts.....Finally I hooked into an OLD set of Taylor made tri-metal irons, with the base-perimeter weighting....(circa 2000, 2001?) Graphite burner bubble shafts... Love 'em.

Never been to Hawaii, but damn, Maui looks nice.  Mostly farm land?  Looks rather small town-ish.

Good for you.

Congrats. That's awesome. I am super happy for you and your family. You deserve it. It's great to live tht dream after busting your hump for so long. The flying back and forth should be interesting but when the deal is that good, it's worth it. Everyone knows where to crash on Maui now lol.
