Wow, that would be smart. They sure seem to keep talking like cap is no issue. Rudolph keeps getting mentioned as a potential salary dump, but I don't think the Vikings want to lose him. I think a Waynes trade or extension is the most likely.
Champagne taste in a beer budget...I'd rather extend Waynes than lose anyone right now...

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Griffen has a nice bounce back year: his tank isn't empty. Last year was a rough one for him personally and it showed. The guy is only 31 years old. He'll have something to prove and I think that works mentally big time for a guy like Everson. Expect #97 to bring it in 2019.
31 is getting-up there, I'm wait and see on EG. Frankly I'm more surprised he's here than not with the financials attached to him. They clearly see him as a core player with gas in the tank.
We've got issues around Rudolph, Waynes, MacAlex etc...
Back to Weatherly - this sums it up nicely for me:

It's all about what can you do for me going forward in these situations. Great story with a 7th rounder too.

Maybe - but I think teams that need to make tough salary decisions about multiple positions, including areas where they have struggled (offense) or where they have multiple young players emerging (defensive line) have to be willing to let go of older costly guys who might, or might not, come back from problems. But Griffen doesn't get mentioned while younger guys who have been steady (Rudolph) or improving (Waynes) do. SMH
I can see the allure of creating so cap space with Griff, but I thought we already went to that well? Regardless, Weatherly is certainly capable of starting at the LDE SPOT with Hunter swinging over, but then you are down to zero proven depth.
Don't get me wrong, I really like Weatherly's upside. When people here were talking about Bower as the guy, I felt much stronger about Weatherly. I just think Griffen is really an underrated dude now on this board suddenly and I wouldn't sleep on him. But I think Z and the staff were blown away how much better Weatherly got game after game with the playing time.

A 3-man rotation of Hunter, Griffen, Weatherly is strong. You need to add another name to that mix before you can think about moving on from Griff. If they hadn't restructured Everson earlier this year they would have drafted a DE early.
They will get some additional cap space for in-season moves but they don't need to worry about 2020 much. They will tinker with Kirk's deal next off-season which will give them plenty of functional space one way or another.
Not sure they do it, but I'd be all for paying Weatherly. I've seen enough that if you can get him to sign a 4 year deal right now for something reasonable, I say go for it. He's a good player.
In recent years the Vikings have done a great job at locking up ascending talent. Not sure that's sustainable, but hopefully we're able to keep Weatherly around.

Read something about Weatherly taking over the Jack role, the stand up pass rusher on passing downs that creates the mismatches in the blocking scheme. If that is the case, sign me up as signing onto favoring the signs pointing to him signing an extension.
We signed Hunter in similar fashion if I recall. I think it would be a good thing to get him signed

Does the possibility of using Barr at DE have any impact on the need for 3? Or is having Barr rush just something that gets talked about, and that he would like to do, but never actually becomes a significant part of the defensive scheme? If Weatherly is playing the Jack role, Barr won't.

We'll never know if Bower or Aruna are ready to step up if they can't even get some playing time in the 3rd DE role.
We need to quit drafting good players that are also good people, makes it a lot easier to say move on when they gives us a reason to not like then.
Maybe rs needs to incorporate a smoot factor, if they dont rank smooty enough they will be to nice and good to easily part with.
I thought his weakness was his technique, but he has talked about working on that. This guy is smart, soon to be real good.
