Going to make him possibly the highest paid TE in football? Really? 5 years?

Can someone help me understand why they'd want to do this? I'm really asking here..... :o

We need to find a way to keep Rudy, but I would not be a fan of a multi year deal. Curious to see what sort of magic Rick and Rob spin into the word "multi."

From what I'm reading this morning, 5 years.....but how much of that is hard and real is unknown.

You can drop your transmission switching gears like this.
trade bait
to pay reduction to
5 year contract
(of which he will play one or two)

Yeah this is my thinking. Very mixed messages I keep getting. I'm a huge fan and defender of Rudy here. I'm not big on the idea of a 5 year commitment though. There has to be a easy way out in a couple years. I do believe he is important to us now though. So talking is encouraging.

Always interesting in Eagan.  We'll have to get a look at how much of the $$ is real and how is it being paid?

I would prefer to cut him.  He is not worth a roster spot imo.

Is the team better next year without Rudy?  I'm not sure why having the best TE in Viking history not named Steve Jordan on the team is a bad thing.

The team is having cap problems because of a certain mediocre QB, not because of frivolous spending towards at the TE position.  I hope they get a deal done for Rudy.

Uh, what?  Rudolph isn't worth a roster spot?  I guess there are only about 5 or 6 TEs in the NFL that are worth a roster then...

this is absurd,  he is still a value to the team,  but after spending a 2nd rounder on the position,  doubling down on the position with a guy of limited athleticism who will be 30 soon.....with the team already in cap hell.... this imo is either a bull shit contract  (think little guaranteed after year 2) which I doubt Rudy would be interested in,   or we should really be questioning the front office (which is hard to do historically when it comes to cap matters)  a big money deal with quality guarantees makes him tough to trade unless he really finds a new gear and increased production with a better line for the QB.

Pretty harsh. I tend to compare Rudolph to Everson Griffen in value, because the team decided Everson is "worth a roster spot".

Who started more games the last 3 years?
Which is older? Which has significant health/whatever question marks?Which of these players has a young replacement on the roster who has actually played in the NFL and produced?Which plays on a unit that has been a weakness for the Vikings and shouldn't be stripped of proven resources?
I expect this extension will have overall numbers that sound impressive but there won't be much more guaranteed than Rudolph's 2019 salary. Why is that bad?

with the way Rudy has talked about long term security,  i dont see him getting cozy with a bull shit contract.  He would likely be better off playing out his last year and entering FA than to take a deal with little/no additional guaranteed money.

I would cut him too!

EG isn’t worth what his reputation is imo.

I would have preferred BRob last year over EG.

The #Vikings have reportedly offered Kyle Rudolph a five-year extension that would make him one of the highest paid TEs in the #NFL https://thevikingage.com/2019/05/17/report-minnesota-vikings-offered-rudolph-extension/ …
Rudolph’s camp backed away from talks a week ago, I was told, but this report claims Vikings still making offers. 35m

keep your chin up,  thats just from Florio, he used to have some good stuff,  but since he went full time big league I think he is getting soft and slow in terms of news and football takes.

Right, none of us know how long ago Florio talked to his "source".  Could be news or could be a big nothing burger.

Unless he wasn't lying when he said he wanted to stay in Minnesota. I've said this before, but I can't think of a player on the Vikings who seems to enjoy his off-field life in Minnesota more than Rudolph.  And, yes, that's just a perception on my part.

I really want him back for 2019. Having him and Irv on the field at the same time will be a very good thing for this offense. That said, I'm not a big fan of any sort of long term deal that puts us in a finanical straitjacket down the road. A well-written, team-friendly deal that gives him some guarantees, gives us some cap relief this year, but also gives the Vikings some outs would be OK with me.

Right now, this is all just a rumor. And it's not even being reported by some of the better known rumor mongers.
