There is a legit competition for backup QB, folks. MANY teams wanted this guy.

Wondering if this is an indictment against Mannion or Sloter?

So why not just draft this guy with your last pick in the 7th? It is unlikely we were going to lose out on the LS from Air Force who may not be able to play this year anyway. I don’t get these decisions.

That right there is a great question.

The long snapper already had multiple UDFA offers before the draft was over.

It's an interesting development.

If the Packers had made this move everyone and their brother would be talking about Rogers eventual successor lol!

Unfortunately, that means little to what kind of pro either will be. Browning has also had 2 shoulder surgeries. I'm rooting for the guy obviously as he's a Viking now.

I thought teams had a limited pool of money to work with when signing UDFAs. When i read $140k - I thought teams only had something small like $40k-$60k to work with when signing UDFAs.

It is interesting that Jones gets dogged by many.  Who were his receivers and backs though? Can anyone name any? Murray, Haskins, and Lock had better weapons this past season. Browning?  He had Myles Gaskin, John Ross, Dante Pettis, Will Dissly, Drew Sample, etc. for his time there. Maybe Jones will end up a bust but he was plagued by drops his entire career even with lesser weapons. https://twitter.com/NFLResearch/status/1110571452036612097

Jones completed 59.9% of his career pass attempts at Duke, but per @PFF he had receivers drop 86 passes in his career. Only Drew Lock (96) had more over the past 3 seasons.
I will say I liked Browning at Washington.  He stands in the pocket and has gotten it done.

The only thing about Jones is how high he was taken. If that's dogging him, alrighty then. And there needs to be a legit competition for backup QB. Good luck Jake.

You know how everyone looks like Tom Brady in their highlight reel? Well... this guy looks like Tom Brady...

Browning is incredibly seasoned in the pocket. Nothing really "wows" you until you realize how routine the throws are. He makes quick decisions. He makes smart ones. He's accurate. I like the signing.

4 year starter... put up 43 TDs to 9 INTs in his sophomore season. The TD numbers fell off dramatically in his Junior and Senior season (19 and 16).

I think the team is very high on Sloter but want to see him truly earn his keep. They went out and signed a cheap guy who has exactly what you'd want for a competition: experience. Sloter lacks a lot of experience at the position. He was a 1 year starter his senior year for the Northern Colorado Bears. Sean Mannion was a 4 year collegiate starter and has an NFL start. Mannion already was a #2. But we didn't overpay and force him into the #2 here - with Sloter being "our guy," his his spot to lose.

I see the college career of Jake Browning and there it is again: 4 year starter. I think while it may be Sloter's job to lose he is going to need to display a command of the offense. He has an advantage of sorts from already being here. He needs to show it. He's competing against 2 guys who have a natural ability to QB an offense. He needs to squash any advantage they may have taking in and digesting our playbook because they very well could progress faster.

I'm kind of seeing this as the right way to do it. Sloter has a chance to prove it but we've got guys on roster who will show us on tape if he deserves it...

basically, I think it's a Sealed Indictment against Mannion - one that will go in the shredder if Sloter gets, uh... arrested, by the coaching staff during the preseason.

Browner is the #3. Sloter is the #2 unless Mannion gets it by default.

So the question was why not take Browning with the last pick - Most likely they didn't think Cutting would sign with them A, next is they think they can fix the service issue so he can do both, C he will likely save the Vikings $500,000 for the cap this year vs Browning who may or may not make the team or be on the practice squad.  I like Browning as a prospect like many do here, but there is no sure thing and he is merely a lottery ticket.  Cutting on the other hand gives the Vikings some likely flexibility with the cap, and they are looking at every option available to lower the cap.  That is well worth picking him as the last pick in the draft and then spending the majority of your money on the QB you want.

Yes.  Finally Rick has started addressing the blind spot of developmental QB.  For too long he had his draft pick and wouldn't allow any developmental competition at QB.

I have a hunch Mannion and Browning are motivators for Sloter. I'm basing this on nothing but a hunch, but Sloter has all the tools, has put up just ridiculous numbers in the preseason, but I sometimes wonder if the Vikings might want him to push a little harder.

well said.  I liked the value of Browning and Stidham in this draft given out QB situation.  Both are reliable prospects flying under the radar

Browning is a perfect guy for the Vikings to bring in as a developmental QB.  He's a 4-year starter and has 39 wins and 2 Conference Championships on his resume at a major college program.  Good accuracy with a career 64.6% completion percentage.  I think he's a better prospect than Ryan Finley who was drafted in the early 4th round and the best part is...  we didn't even need to use a draft pick to get him.

I'm interested to see what he can do.

Intriguing prospect. Definitely more than just a camp arm. Love the fact that the Wilfs approve going after these guys aggressively. What I don't know is why it was necessary to pay him that much. Be curious to know how many other teams were interested.
