The third pick ....
The center was listed by many as the best IOL in the draft.
i was really hoping the Vikings would have traded up after that pick and would have tried to land a top notch OT. But i was still fine with the TE (Smith).
Then they traded down multiple times and drafted the Boise State RB.
This was a head-scratcher since they need so much help on the O-line.
There are still some great picks left and hopefully they start stockpiling O-line picks.
As an aside, at least they did not draft the Sioux Falls guy.
… sucked.
Sorry, thought this was fill-in-the-blank :p
Im an easy going guy, but this third round royally frustrates me. I dont know for sure, but I bet this guy will not make positive contributions to the team, and I bet he would have been available rounds later. I am so baffled and want to puke.
Hey it would not be RS if he did not make some bad moves. Atleast he got that first one right.
Was inevitable. Things were going well and then he heard the trade down, trade down voice. Nothing against the player but the pick was a head scratcher.
Alex M will be an excellent replacement for Murray as he has the ability to pick up & drive to acquire the tough yards. Excellent runner at the goal line. I watched him play college ball at BSU and I'm looking forward to watching him succeed for the Vikings.

I also was baffled by the trade downs. A lot of good players came off the board during that time.
I thought they would draft Ozigbo in the 5th or 6th round. But this pick appears to be much better than Ozigbo and should be a good replacement for Murray.
I think Stephanski has a specific idea of what type of players he needs to run his offense, and Rick is going after the missing pieces.
The players chosen today better include another O lineman with starting potential before the 6th or 7th round.
Drafting only one O lineman, when it is such a glaring need, is risky.
Rick likes to gamble. Hope it works out.
Not sure why but I think we'll end up liking this pick.
He looks to be an excellent fit for the new zone scheme and he’s pretty decent catching passes. He improved his 40 at his pro day to a 4.5-4.55 time which is more in line with his tape in my opinion.
In many ways he looks like the usual zone “Broncos” style running back. Not the fastest but a one cut back with good vision and slippery. Think Terrell Davis mold. More recent player comparisons to me would be Alfred Morris or Nick Chubb. I think he could be a nice complement to Delvin and good safety valve to have if Delvin gets injured again. I don’t believe he would have gotten out of the 3rd round. He had a 4th round grade based on his slow combine time so with the big improvement at his pro day was likely a 3rd round pick. Many teams liked him from what I’ve read prior to the draft.
I'm wondering if those that don't like the pick are solely basing their opinion on various draft boards of did they watch any film too?
Knew we had to replace murray and I like the power and first step ability.
I don't like the pick from the standpoint that its a RB heavy draft through the 4th and 5th rounds. Walter had Mattison as the 23rd ranked back in this draft with a 5th to 7th round grade. We needed to address the backup RB spot but it didn't make sense at that point and to me I think there are better backs going off the board now here in the 4th round and some guys that haven't even been drafted yet

I didn't like the Mattison pick because it was too early for a backup RB when we still have a black hole at #3 WR (which for most teams these days is a starter). Hakeem Butler goes #103 and Ridley goes to the BEARS while Kentucky RB Benny Snell didn't go until # 123.
This is the Save Treadwell draft.
When your “starter” makes 14 starts in two seasons, you need a good backup.
I imagine our O will look a lot like it did in 2017 when we were second in rushing attempts. This is why I thought we'd go RB on Day 2. I think he's part of a RBBC situation. Will he be better than Montgomery, Sanders, or Snell? Don't know, but I like the pick.
I think he really fit the scheme. His 1.51 10-yard split certainly didn’t hurt. I doubt they view him as a backup RB. He will be of course but I think he’s seen as a guy capable of starting in the league as a bell cow. He’s shown himself to be an every down type of back.
Personally I think very little of Walt’s “analysis”. He’ll write something up on a guy in September and never change it before the draft. That’s how you end up wit a majority of scouts having a guy 3/4 and good old Walt at 6/7th. In fact I’d say he’s one of the worst out there. However, he has some insiders that seem to do a good job with mocks, rumors etc. Probably top 10 worst website designs out there too lol! Like stepping back to turn of the century.

And a number of other reputable sites had him as a late 3rd/4th rounder... fans get too hung up on "value" based on where their favorite draft site had a guy ranked.
None of us have watched enough games of any of these guys to have an extremely strong opinion on them. Even if you are a huge college football fan, I doubt you've seen more than a game or two of anyone beyond the top 100 picks... And you probably aren't watching a specific player on that team.

I don't think its a back-up role for Mattison. He will be splitting time with Cook, running short yardage and pounding the ball. I think he'll get at least 25% of the carries.
Not sure where it can be found but there’s a video of the war room as the Vikings make the pick. They are obviously happy to get him and there’s a coach who literal bangs the table for him when Rick tells him they picked him.
The video makes it obvious the coaching staff and front office love this kid and the potential he offers. If anyone can find and post it I think people would find it interesting. I believe it was on the Vikings own site.
