WHAT HAPPENED IN GREEN BAY

A checked-out coach. A tuned-out quarterback. A soap opera where there should have been a dynasty. And those who saw the Aaron Rodgers-Mike McCarthy wreckage up close say we didn't know the half of it.

Tyler Dunne April 4, 2019

There had to be a breaking point. An incident, an argument, a loss, a moment that doomed the football marriage of Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy.

Anyone could see the Packers quarterback and head coach were headed for divorce well before that inconceivable 20-17 loss to the lowly Cardinals in December, the one that finally got McCarthy fired. Death stares and defiance from Rodgers had been constant for years by then.

But how far back do you have to go to find the beginning of the end?

Was it Week 3 of the 2017 season, when cameras caught Rodgers barking "Stupid f--king call!" at his coach?

Or back further, to the NFC Championship Game on Jan. 18, 2015, when McCarthy coached with the ferocity of a sloth, calling for field goals from the 1-yard line twice in the first half and then running three straight times with five minutes left to infuriate his QB and effectively euthanize a Super Bowl season?

Or even earlier, to 2013, when Rodgers and McCarthy appeared close to throwing haymakers midway through a loss in Cincinnati?

Those who observed this relationship from the beginning say you have to keep going.

Back to the honeymoon period. Even as the Packers went 15-1 in 2011, with Rodgers as league MVP. Even as they won their last Super Bowl title, in the 2010 season, with Rodgers as Super Bowl MVP. Even then, Rodgers was already seething at his coach.

So keep going. All the way to when these two were first brought together. In early 2006.

The worst-kept secret at 1265 Lombardi Avenue was that Rodgers seemed to loathe his coach from the moment McCarthy was hired.

Nobody holds a grudge in any sport like Rodgers. When it comes to Rodgers, grudges do not merrily float away. They stick. They grow. They refuel.

Looks like plenty of blame to go around from TT, Rogers and McCarthy.

I just hope the shit-show continues with LaFleur.

The Bears and Vikings have gotten better since Rogers early days, no cake-walks anymore.

What can you expect with a prima dona like Aaron Rodgers.  McCarthy was more like a high priced babysitter than a Head Coach.

I like this line"The Packers went through their terrible time of losing before," Harris says. "History can repeat itself."
And yes PF, plenty of blame to go around.  Everyone lauded each of that trio as a genius and their egos did them in.  McCarthy sucked as a coach, but they had their best years when he got the QB to buy in an follow the offense.  But Rodgers ego and love of the dramatic made him hold the ball.

Yes, they deserved each other.  And we can all hope Harris' comment was prophetic.

Not me.  I soaked up every drop of their Packer tears.  It was like elixir.

I'm really not a petty guy.  Except when it comes to the Packers.   B)

I started glazing over a bit near the end, but yes, enjoyed most every minute of it.

Another injury plagued year or two will likely wrap up the fairy tale. Life will come full circle, when he is once again sitting alone after everyone is gone; just like what happened in the green room all those years ago.

It’s really funny what has gone on in GB. Rodgers is a very unlikeable guy. Just looking at him makes me want to punch him.
When Favre was their QB, I didn’t like him as a Packer, because he was a Packer, but I liked him as a QB. But, Rodgers is a dick and I can’t ever see me liking the guy.

fascinating read.  no real surprise about what kind of a guy AR id, and McCarthy for that matter but still the glimpse into the team dynamics was indeed fascinating.

I don't think there's any doubt they've squandered some opportunities to get to a few more Superbowls. Remains to be seen if we can truly throw dirt on the grave yet or not. 2019 is a big year to see if the Bears are real, if Minnesota can rebound or if the Packers are done

Big year for Patricia too.

Don't think he's not feeling some heat. Flowers could end-up being a PITA to the North - not Mack dominating, but good none the less.

I'm sure GB will be more competitive while DC's adjust to LaFleur's ways. Key will be Rogers health, like every year in GB.

I agree. Rodgers will have to deal with if it was worth it to tank on his coach after several years of causing open rebellion. All the could have beens in his prime that he helped to sabotage. Couldn't happen to a nicer couple guys though.  Here's to poor health and bad luck...lol. SKOL!!!

Here’s what I know: Aaron Rogers can’t even get along with his own family. They have/had been estranged for years. The parents gave him a cake walk upbringing and he’s just a tool. He’s not a good guy and it’s really that simple.
