HaHa...yeah it's no Dungeons and Dragons stuff. That what kept me away. I'm a geek but I'm not a nerd...lol.
Yeah, it has everything that all great drama has without being gratuitous or self-serving IMO. What happens to Stark is shocking but it makes sense in the context of the story. It really drives everything. And you don't feel manipulated like when Negan shows up in The Walking Dead. Stopped watching at that point and haven't watched it since.
Dish/HBO spat a pita...Good thing I have Amazon Firestik.

I've not had HBO in 10 years. I get all my shows streaming now. There are drawbacks with this method too.
