Mike Priefer
OK I'll say it here. I am not a fan of calling for anyone to be fired but it's time to try something else or should I say someone else at special team coordinator.
Let's check..
- Blair Walsh
- Kai Forbath
- Daniel Carlson
- Dan Bailey
All of them are erratic. No team has gone through kickers like we have yet we still don't have a reliable one between high draft picks and free agent signings. They all came in with stellar backgrounds or reputations yet they find a way to miss kicks.
So at some point we need to look at who is coaching these kickers.
problem is, his coverage units have been stellar plus he has had good returners in patterson and sherels in his career.
kickers are kickers, someone like zim wont take out a coach because our kicker misses kicks
It's time for Priefer to go. He has definitely had issues managing kickers over his career, but we have also struggled on all phases of special teams this year. In year's past, we could rely on special teams winning us a game or two per year and they've cost us games this season. It feels like a good time to switch things up and maybe find someone better at managing the mental side of kickers. I also think that Zimmer needs to improve how he manages kickers too. He's right to be upset with poor performance, but I think his mentality can add to the problems at times.
Seems like a fair post. I'm wondering the same things...
Mike says Jesus will fix the kicking game any day now.

But it definitely seems to be something other than the kickers. You can blame Walsh, Carlson, even Forbath, because they had weak or no history of success. But bring in someone like Bailey, and you have to explain why the most accurate kicker in NFL history is inaccurate when wearing a Viking uniform. We probably have problems somewhere in the snapper/holder zone. I guess Mike Morris really was a superstar.
And sticking with Sherels is starting to look pretty stubborn. Yes, he was a good (but not awesome) punt returner a few years ago, but he's had nothing this year. I think we can find someone else to signal a fair catch. Keeping a roster spot for Sherels meant we had to play him at CB yesterday, too. I think we would have been safer with old Terence Newman in the game.

Bailey was let go from the Cowboys for a reason; he was missing kicks, and wasn't as reliable. Bailey is still better than Walsh or Carlson, but it's not like he's in the prime of his career.

Well, that's kind of true but the Cowboys also wanted to save money. Bailey is 30 - for PKs, that really is the prime of a career. He did get hurt last year, so are you saying the Vikings signed him without being sure he was fully recovered? If they did, shame on whoever approved that.
kickers have routines, like a golfers pre swing routine... how much of baileys miss can be put on Wiles for deciding to go take a shit right before 4th down? ( i am kidding about the shit part, i have no idea why the holder wasnt out there until seconds before the snap.)

I guess I just remembered hearing he struggled last season and was hurt for a few games. Looks like all of his misses were after he was injured, so maybe he isn't healed up? I have no idea, but damn it's frustrating that we can't seem to get through an entire game without a missed FG or PAT.http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/24548060/dallas-cowboys-release-kicker-dan-bailey-go-brett-maher
FRISCO, Texas -- Dan Bailey, the second-most accurate kicker in NFL history, has been released by the Dallas Cowboys.
The Cowboys opted to keep Brett Maher,
who has not kicked in a regular-season game, over Bailey, their kicker
since 2011. In the preseason, Maher made four of his five field goal
attempts, including a 57-yarder in Thursday's preseason finale against
the Houston Texans.Bailey made his only attempt in the preseason, a 35-yarder against the Cincinnati Bengals.
In training camp practices in Oxnard, California, Bailey missed only
five attempts in special-teams and 11-on-11 drills, with four coming in
consecutive practices.
Bailey is coming off his worst season, in
which he missed four games because of a groin injury and connected on 15
of 20 field goal tries. He also missed the first two extra points of
his career. All of his misses came after he was injured.
Maher was signed by the Cowboys in April after sitting out of football in 2017 following his release from the Cleveland Browns.
In 2016, he made 41 of 50 field goal attempts for the Hamilton Tiger
Cats of the CFL. He went to training camp with the Cowboys as an
undrafted free agent in 2013 but was released.
Bailey won the
Cowboys' kicker job in 2011 as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma
State. He made 26 straight kicks, an NFL rookie record. He has made 27
field goals of at least 50 yards in the regular season and three more in
the playoffs. In 2015, he was named to the Pro Bowl. The Cowboys signed
him to a seven-year contract in 2014.
With the move, the Cowboys will save $3.4 million against the cap this year. Maher will make $480,000.
You all better get used to Drafted Kickers going forward. I can't think of a currently active HC that has publicly criticized his Kickers like Zimmer. No FA is his right mind would want to sign here now.

well I was going to dub it the Kluwe-Anderson, but it sounded too much like a construction firm... ;) B)
