LANDOVER, Md. -- Alex Smith got sacked midway through the third quarter, and on his way down to the ground, his lower right leg bent backwards in a way the human body isn't supposed to go.
Redskins coach Jay Gruden announced after the game that Smith broke his tibia and fibula and would need surgery immediately.
Smith was carted off the field and waved to the crowd as he headed towards the tunnel and into the locker room, and the FedEx Field faithful gave a hearty cheer. If you want to watch the video, you can do so here
Smith was having a roller coaster game before the injury. He seemed to be accurate throwing downfield, but his numbers looked ugly. Smith completed just 12 of 27 passes for 135 yards and had two first half interceptions.
In an ironic twist, Smith's injury came 33 years to the day of Joe Theismann's infamous ankle injury during a Monday night game against the Giants.

With Smith sidelined, the Redskins will turn to Colt McCoy at quarterback.
McCoy led a comeback charge, but a 62-yard Dustin Hopkins field goal attempt fell short on the final play of the game. Following the 23-21 loss, Gruden announced that Smith suffered a broken tibia and fibula and will need immediate surgery.

Theismann like injury. Year over for him. Wish him well in his recovery.  Skins now turn over their playoff hopes to Colt McCoy.  With the Eagles wasting away and the Giants way back. It now looks like it could be the Cowboys division. That's one depressing thought.
