I, State Your Name...
I called him the worst pick of our draft. But that's because he was so goddamned awful at the Senior Bowl. We'll see. What I've seen so far is very encouraging. And he's getting better. I'm not yet convinced we have a stud here, but he's WAY farther along that I thought he'd be at this point.
I take no responsibility for my ignorance. I really don't do the whole draft analysis thing. I only watch a couple college teams really. My Gators and the Gophers. So I listened to everyone else who told me he was a reach. They lied to me. I was framed.
Ha Suckers----I distinctly remember questioning the pick but with the caveat that they know a hell of of alot more than me so in Zim I trust.
Nice cover of my behind.
I read somewhere (probably from one of our great football minds here) that teams are no longer looking for great college offensive linemen. They're looking for physical specimens that can be "coached up" to play at the next level (specifically OT's). Since DE's in the NFL are outrageous physical specimens (see Hunter, Danielle), the NFL offenses have to find similarly skilled athletes to play opposite of them.
And if no one else takes credit for posting something like that... then I'm going to take credit for it myself. B)
Well, I guess it's settled. He'll be a Pro Bowler for the next 10 years and never get injured. Just like Dalvin-jury is Marshall Faulk 2.0.
Good to know.
Can Vikings fans for ONCE not get too arrogant and condescending after a few games? Especially about a drafted OL? Matt Khalil ring any bells?
And there's lil abner with his dreary cloud to rain on our parade
Well I'm one "up" on you, I dogged both O'Neill and Mike Hughes. Next year's CB group : XR, Waynes, Hughes Alexander, Holton Hill. That is some ridiculous CB depth. Now can we finally find a freaking guard?!?
I would say you need more time before crowning his arse. But he does look decent.
The interesting thing is if anyone criciticizes the PFF grades but now accepts them.
I don't think anyone is doing that here but I have seen it before.
Mike Zimmer does not care about their grades.
Still, imagine if the Vikings would have taken Hernandez AND O'Neill with their first two picks.
They easily could have done it too.
With Holton Hill playing well the Hughes pick seems like a luxury and he was just doing OK.
I expect the Hughes pick is a sign that they do not plan on extending Waynes because the cost will be too high.
Hopefully, Spielman can do like other GMs and trade him to get a guaranteed pick instead of waiting and hoping on a compensatory pick.

They can draft DT help LB help and let Barr and Richardson walk or Spielman does his piss on a veteran thing and Brez does his contract voodoo and we keep everybody? Either way I don't want to see Waynes go any where. IIRC Alexander is a FA so Hughes in the slot with Rhodes and Waynes outside and Hill as a nickel, dime, or insurance back ....that sounds a lot better to me.I would say you need more time before crowning his arse. @"JimmyinSD" said:Alexander has one more year. 2019 is his last season. Since Hughes did not play in the slot in college and has not played there much this year, I would think he might do better on the outside. Maybe he can make the switch but I am sure there will be some growing pains. Hopefully not to the Josh Robinson level. I just think Waynes is going to get north of 10 mil per year on his next deal. That might be too much regardless of if they keep Richardson or Barr.@"MarkSP18" said:I would say you need more time before crowning his arse. But he does look decent. Good question. Look in the mirror for once and ask yourself if you cannot get so arrogant and condescending for once when all you have is negativity to spread. Granted I am not saying there are no misses only hits. But all you talk about and see is misses. All you do is post the negative extreme. And nowhere am I seeing anyone saying anything about Pro Bowl or Marshall Failk 2.0.
I knew nothing about O'Neill except that he seemed to be athletic - I think he was a TE when he got to college - and needed to get stronger. But I had no real opinion, positive or negative, about that pick - just that it had to be an O-lineman.
I mostly recall people losing their minds that we took a CB with our first pick rather than an O-lineman. I thought CB was the right pick, although the selection of Hughes was a surprise considering the circumstances under which he left NC. Now I think Hughes was the right pick.
I've seen Hernandez play a little with the Giants. What I saw was not good. Small sample size, but still. I think Hughes is a much better pick than Hernandez would have been.

I really shouldn't engage, but the irony is just too rich here.
In a mea culpa thread no less.

I don't agree about the Hughes-to-replace-Waynes theory. I think it means Zimmer wants 3 starting-caliber CBs, and Mac Alexander wasn't cutting it. Alexander is probably lucky Hughes got hurt, because he might have stopped playing much this year and been cut next summer.
But I doubt we will trade Waynes. We have been spoiled by the team being able to extend good young players before the end of their rookie contracts, but that will end eventually. I think he will play 2019 on his 5th-year deal and then we'll see what happens. Most teams lose some players.
As for O'Neill: I must also make the admission I thought he was a reach and a bad pick. Worse, I thought the Vikings should have drafted Connor Williams in round 1 to play RT. Williams is having surgery (not that anyone could predict), but he was moved inside to LG and didn't play nearly as well as O'Neill. I'm glad to admit I was wrong (but yes it is early in his career).
