How did Griffen look vs. the Lions?
Living here in the Bay area does not lend me the ability to see all the Vikes games, but can I get some feedback on how Griff's looked coming back? I see he had 1.5 sacks, which is great! How many snaps was he in - is he playing most of the snaps? Hows he looking when he's in? Very happy he's back and that he's taking care of himself off the field - wondering how he's been looking on the field - Thanks!
Griff had a nice game and was disruptive. He looked way more like his old self than last week against NO. He and Hunter were monsters on the outside, while Sheldon and TJ on the inside were in Stafford's face for what seemed like the good majority of the day.
Zim also mixed in some nice blitzes too for added unexpected pressures.
It was great having Griff back though. He looked good and was having fun out there.
He looked good. They all looked good. Richardson, Hunter, Griff...and damned if Tom Johnson isn't ideally suited for Zimmer's defense. He's a below average player everywhere else, but he seems to really excel in Zimmer's scheme.
They were getting push up the middle.
However also off the edges and around the sides. Stafford was side of beef hanging in the Shamrock meat packing plant.

He is a good pass rush specialist. Not big enough to hold up all game against the run, but a great sub.
As to how they looked. Stafford just looked like, well Stafford out there on some plays. One play Griffen blew up the screen by knocking his guy into the RB that was supposed to leak out. Stafford looked like Fred Astaire out there, his feet jumping every which way. I can only imagine his thoughts, "oh shit, the line is letting everyone through and my RB is on his ass."
So once the jailbreak was on, they all looked like all stars. Weatherly knocked Stafford off his feet by pushing the LT back into him. Even Bradford was laughing at how awkward Stafford looked on that one.
Weatherly walking Decker back into Stafford for the sack is also worth a call out...we are set for a long time at DE...

played 52 out of 70 defensive snaps
— Everson Griffen tallied his first sack since returning from a six-game absence last week. He played in 74 percent of the snaps against Detroit, up a bit from 70 percent against New Orleans in Week 8.

WTF??? TJ began his career in the NFL the same year as Chad Greenway.

He bounced around and never really latched on. CFL, arena and all that. So yes, below average and all that.Or he started to figure it out and actually was on an NFL regular roster after 5 years. He started to be a solid role player with the Saints . Then in the year before Zimmer was here, he really blossomed and had 6.5 sacks. And he really hasn't been anywhere else (preseason in Seattle) since he developed.

Nothing worse than someone who won't let a silly, meaningless argument go (and by that I mean ME), but I don't think this is a case of a player suddenly "developing." He's 34 years old. I think what you have here is a player who really seems to thrive in one particular system. I feel pretty confident now that if you put him back on the Seahawks or Saints or any other team, you wouldn't get the TJ we're used to seeing.

Agreed. I think that's pretty obvious actually.

And since I haven't been able to clarify myself in the previous 14 posts, I agree that he is a great fit as a role player here. Just that other than his first 3 years on an NFL roster with the Saints, he hasn't played anywhere but here.I am glad we stole him back from the Seahawks. Funny we have Richardson who was a Seahawk starting and then the guy they signed to replace him is his backup. Always liked TJ, just not as a starter. To me that was his biggest issue.
I think the big thing with Griffen coming back is that it
gives us much better depth than we had before.
I think with Weatherly as the 3rd DE and Tom Johnson as the
pass rushing DT, that gives us a much deeper rotation than we had earlier in
the season. While it sucked that Griffen
was out, I think that playing time was very valuable to Weatherly and our
confidence in him.
