You never know just how bad these things are going to be, since the media will always over-hype it (either for precautionary reasons or "click-bait" reasons), but people are definitely going to be suffering for weeks to come.  Wind damage is usually a more visible form of destruction, but if you've ever been to a place that has been flooded- you know that water damage is (in my opinion) much worse.  And there's going to be alot of water coming ashore with this hurricane.  God be with those who are in the storm... and those who show up to help with the restoration work after it's gone.

I moved this out of ST because I dont think that this type of message should turn political or religious.  This is a sentiment that every American should be sharing right now.  Yes God be with those people and those that are there to help them.

The thing to remember about much of that area is it's not all highrises like what you seen from the beach front videos continually played on the weather channel. Much of this part of the panhandle is poor. When you move inland it's much different.  Alot of wooden cottage like shacks and trailers. The don't call it the Redneck Riviera for nutten. So that means alot of folks who were already pretty poor are much poorer tonight. Thoughts and prayers to all.

Red tide has been documented since the 1790s, at least. Hurricanes happen every year, albeit a powerful one. The Gulf of Mexico being so warm that Michael just picked up a bunch of energy unfortunately. Very sad.

I've lived in Florida over 30 years. In that time I've seen patterns that come and go. At least what seemed like to me. When I got here in the 80's they came into the gulf with greater frequency. Then in the 90s they seem to hit the east coast and Carolina's more. In the mid 2000's it was us again. There is a science to this. El Nina or El Nino that determines paths in different seasons. I guess it all starts in Africa. I don't really know the science. Just what I've observed.
For the record red tide has been around almost every year some worse then others for all 30+ years. Nothing seems to be getting better or worse. Just good seasons and bad.
