Offensive outburst across the league
Is it just me, or does it seem like every team in this league forgot how to play defense? To see a team like Cleveland who has a solid defense
give up 45 points to the Raiders in a OT loss is just one example of how this year so far has been nothing but offensive shootouts.
If the Vikings can just figure out how to be at or slightly above average on defense for the rest of the year, our offense can certainly put up enough points to win games even without a running game. The question is, can Zimmer do it? I'm having my doubts with how we have been exploited since last year. Without a pass rush, our zone schemes will continue to get picked apart.
The league wants shootouts, it's arena ball now. How sad is it that we are hoping for the defense to be at or below average. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.

I corrected my original post as I meant to say at or slightly above average, but compared to where we were in the early part of 2017 it's still very sad indeed.

Yeah that would be better and yes it's still sad. I think the defensive philosophy might have to change in order to move forward. I am encouraged by the offense. That's something to build on. I didn't watch the Browns game, how was the officiating? It was a football free weekend for me.
IT's like some kind of switch was turned on this season...
I will admit my faith has been shaken since the Eagles game through much of this season. Gotta still have hope this early on. The Bears are the eye-openers for me so far.
We're going to be facing an Eagles team returning home after losing, I hope we're the angrier bunch this weekend.

The worst officiating in terms of blown calls I can recall in a long time. The refs put a big bow on the win for the raiders reversing a first down for no good reason that would have sealed the game, and blowing a play dead on an obvious Carr fumble that likely would have been run back for a TD. That crew should be grounded.

Oh wow. That royally sucks but not surprising. I will expect more of that from now on because they are pushing this new brand of football. They had to help the Raiders because they were hyping them like crazy. Cleveland broke their winless streak last game now it was the Raiders turn.
From what I understand there is at least (if not more) 10 QBs right now that are over 70% completion rate. Last year at this time just one (drew brees). Pitch and Catch.

Pitch and Catch.I've mentioned it a few times while talking about why our defense is lackluster. We seem to have forgotten that there is new emphasis on illegal contact and defensive holding on the dbacks, with a receiver allowed to run free after 5 yards, and offensive players allowed to block at the line of scrimmage without it being offensive interference or other prior to the catch....What's a defender supposed to do? IMO they should jam every route and hope for the best but that's only going to work if the pass rush can get home quickly.

Truth, and the D isn't going to like playing Philly next week either. :s
@"purplefaithful" said: Lackluster?They flat-out suck
they rank in the upper part of the bottom 1/3 for defenses league wide, and they have faced the 1st, 14th 17th, and 31st ranked offenses, are we happy... no, but defense is a mess across the league and its still early. I am sure their rankings will eventually improve, but with this schedule and the way the league is being run now... I dont know that it will matter.
It is arena football. Teams are going RIGHT through the D in 30 yard chunks or 3 to 4 play clips. Its crazy. Goff's dropping dimes. RBs are extinct.

Yep... and (in my opinion) this is the beginning of the end. If another league can get enough traction, I will watch it- rather than this. Arena football is (used to be?) on ESPN2 all the time. I watched it- for a little while- but only if there was nothing else on. The same seems to be the trend with the NFL now.
well when they threw that bogus flag to help Mayfield because there was a "crown of the helmet" but the guy was simply pulling up and running past him??? I want an O trying to outsmart a D, not to just see who is faster in the backyard. I want guys getting hit hard. How the league changed SO much in one year is unbelievable.

I might have to check into the Alliance of American Football that Jared Allen is a part of. I have seen a bit on Twitter about it. I guess Troy Polamalu is in on it as well.

That's the league with Brad Childress as head coach of the Atlanta Legends? Mike Vick is player/coach of a team? Oh, the NFL is quivering.Nationwide ratings are up this year, but the Vikings have a bad start and some of you declare the league is ruined. The NFL has repeatedly juiced offense since the 1970s and their audience keeps growing. What do you think half the fans in the league thought about Three-Deep in 1998? "Ruining football" , no doubt. But now OUR team spent 5 years trying to construct a defensive powerhouse, so you hope the NFL will decide they prefer the 16-13 games Mike Zimmer built this team to play.
I really think to an extent the new rules protecting the QB have had an impact on defenses. More passing, more points due to less pass rushing.
Mahomes was fun to watch last night. he can make plays I haven't seen in a long time. If we only had a line. If Zim could turn this D around... But damn, the league has gone from a rookie needing 3 years of development to a few games on the bench then slinging it for 400 yards several TDs and conquering the leagues top Ds.

Yeah I am curious about it because I am hearing that the defense will actually be allowed to play. Lol on whether the NFL is quivering or not.For me, it's not just about the Vikings having a bad start. It's about finding balance with the offense and defense. There has to be a happy medium in there somewhere. As far as previous teams go, there wasn't an issue because of the balance of the game. The rules didn't slant in favor of the offense. Right now a lot of teams are having issues with defense because of what is and isn't allowed. Maybe it's an adjustment period, who knows but I see it as diluting the game. 21 was not a high enough magic number in my mind with this pass happy league. It seems more like 38 is the target. Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.
