I'm kinda surprised but he did struggle this preseason.
I just liked how Quigley kept the ball from being a touch back last year numerous times
Based off of last season, I was really happy with Quigley. Was he really punting that poorly or did Priefer push for another questionable special teams decision? It seems really weird to have a contending team and trying to skirt by with an inexperienced kicker and punter.
Quiqley was set to make $800,000 - kind of eliminates it being a cap move.
I thought Quiqley was doing pretty good up to this point myself too... it's a little surprising. ... I mean... it's just the punter, so whatever I guess... perhaps I haven't been paying attention enough, lol...
it's hard to understand why a punter who is doing things "right" would suddenly be jettisoned over a waiver wire pickup. There has been little to no focus on Quigley's shortcomings or mistakes; he was lauded for his punts inside the 20.
Is it a punt coverage issue? Can the new punter consistently get more hang-time on punts than Quigley? ... I guess there was some concern about punt coverage throughout the preseason...
I'm a little curious on what some of the coaches/staff have to say about the new guy.
OK Priefer, you”ve got a rookie kicker w/ what now will be a new holder, a shiny new punter, & a new kick returner... now show Zim the baby! B)
Horrific move. Rookie K and you pull his holder a week before the start of the season. This will cost us.

Seems more bad could come from cutting a proven punter for one with little experience and even more limited punts this pre-season. Switching a rookie kickers holder the week before the season starts could be problematic. Hope they didn't screw up to positions.
Once you start salivating over how important that is, kicking balls inside the 20, it's hard to even understand why another punters "intangibles" would even matter. I don't care if he can kick the ball out of the stadium... I could understand something like punt coverage and hang time being a smart, understandable reason... but otherwise I just don't understand why you'd leave the position up to an experiment over "potential." ... he's the punter!
And things like "potential" and "kicking it out of the stadium" are just assumptions... because why else would you go out of your way to acquire a new punter?
I would guess it's a hang time issue considering all the long returns we've had during preseason.
Glad to see Quigley go. He was in the bottom 5 in nearly every punting category the last 2 years. People get really hung up on the “no touchbacks” stat, but dont pay attention to how many times he surrendered a fair catch between the 15 and 20. A few punts downed inside the 5 are worth the occasional touchback. Give your guys a chance to down it inside the 10 and risk a touchback — better that than the constant fair catches at the 16 yard line.

winner winner, did yall miss the preseason? there is a reddit thread saying our new punter was the second best rated PFF rated punter this preseason. Still not sure going this route at this time makes sense but who knows?
Actually, I wonder if some of our PK's problems (Blair & Forbath) were due to Quigley. Didn't he start holding... about the same time that Blair started shanking?

I guess my question is If this new guys pff ranking is so high ARG says he seen #2 why was he available? Did Pittsburgh have #1 & 2? Or is there a down side to him? My concern is him as a holder or do we use someone else as a holder. Like I said yesterday hope this doesn't screw up both positions. Kickers...you never care till they make you care. Hopefully I won't care.
I wish we’d go back to using a back-up QB as the holder. It gives a plausible chance to occasionally fake one. Whatever happened to that around the league?
