You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it. — Robin Williams

IF.....if this offensive line can just be anything but OFFENSIVE....it'll be a very fun year.

With Dallas's offensive line, the Vikings would roll  to the Superbowl.

How is that possible?  Why wouldn't the Vikes be on the hook for the whole 900?

It's explained here pretty well:

http://www.spotrac.com/blog/nfl-minimum-salaries-for-2018/

VETERAN MINIMUM BENEFITSWhen qualified, a player with four (4) or more years of NFL experience can earn his total minimum salary, but have a cap figure that reflects two years of experience – or in 2017, $630,000. The contract must be for only one year, and must not contain combined bonus money (signing, roster, workout) that exceeds $90,000.

For instance, let’s pretend Frank Gore signs with the Miami Dolphins in 2018 on a 1 year, minimum salary contract. With 10+ years of experience, he’ll be slotted for a $1,015,000 base salary. With four or more years of experience (11), and a 1 year contract, Gore qualifies for the veteran cap hit benefit. His 2018 cap figure with the Dolphins would be $630,000.

you also have to less out whomevers salary wont be in the top 51. so if its another veteran on a similar minimum deal he might end up even as a savings.

I have to think some of those later round guys on rookie deals will still be out "free" contracts that dont count towards the cap.  Collins and Isi are both likely less money as far as straight up contracts.

I don't claim to be an expert at cap management.  We should leave that to Geoff.  But here:  https://www.reddit.com/r/minnesotavikings/comments/99hmum/schefter_vikings_gave_s_george_iloka_a_oneyear/ Go about 2/3s of the way down its being discussed.  It would likely matter who's spot he's taking on the final 53 and whether that guy is on a rookie deal or not.  Again, not an expert, the posters there may know even less then I do about how the whole salary cap stuff works.
