Baker Mayfield Wows With Composure, Poise Beyond His Years in DebutIf Mayfield had any jitters Thursday night, they didn't show.
The reigning Heisman Trophy winner took over for starter Tyrod Taylor late in the first quarter, and it wasn't long before he commandeered a 14-play, 72-yard scoring drive that showed off a bit of everything from his polished arsenal.
For starters, Mayfield looked composed and confident as a passer. His throws were largely on the money in the early going, and he climbed the pocket with the trademark patience he flashed at Oklahoma to calmly scan through his progressions and keep the chains moving.

Man, the hyperbole in preseason NFL football....every year, lol. The media hypes the crap out of everything.
There were a lot of QB around the league that looked competent Week 1. From 1st rounders to undrafted guys, to newfound "journeyman" types... It made the ones who didn't play well look like hot garbage...
It'll be fun to watch it all shake down through the next few preseason games. There are a lot of high bars set and defenses around the league are only getting better grinding through practices.
I think in the past defense's had the upper hand in preseason. Now it seems opposite. Maybe this year with the tackling rule changes defense is still feeling their way through, even more so. Seems to be alot of great QB's so far. Of course in limited passes. 22 snaps is a pretty short game. Baker is still a work in progress. He will not be Johnny. That will be good for them PR wise. He better set his and their bar higher then that train wreck performance wise. If ever a team needed something good. The Browns have been super needy.
