Hunter Extended

Awesome.
EAGAN, Minn. — One of the NFL’s best young pass rushers isn’t going anywhere.
The Vikings announced that they will sign defensive end Danielle Hunter on Wednesday to a multi-year contract extension.
Hunter, a third-round pick in 2015, has 25.5 sacks over the first three years of his professional career. That stat ranks first among all players who entered the league in 2015.
The Texas native had just 4.5 sacks during his three-year stay at LSU, but he has eclipsed that total in each of his first three seasons with the Vikings.
Hunter had 6.0 sacks as a rookie before setting his career high with 12.5 in 2016.
He scored his first NFL touchdown in the 2016 season opener as he returned a fumble 24 yards for a score. Hunter also recorded a safety when he sacked Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in the end zone in a Week 3 game in Carolina.
Hunter then helped the Vikings defense lead the league in points allowed, yards allowed and third-down percentage in 2018 as he racked up 7.0 sacks in his first full season as a starter.
He has 147 total tackles (according to coaches’ tally) with 36 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries during his career.
The 23-year-old spoke earlier this summer about how he planned to approach his fourth season in the NFL.
“Once you start thinking, that’s when you slow down. A lot of pass rushers tend to overthink because they’re trying to be perfect,” Hunter said. “At my position, you’re not going to be perfect. The best thing about it is to go out there and continue to train and work on your technique, and your body will react.
“ continue to build. I’m young. I came in at 20 years old. I’m just going to continue to build,” Hunter added. “I have, hopefully if God lets it happen, hopefully a lot of years ahead of me to play football. Just growing and keep working.”
Hot DIGGETY
Now Diggs and Barr. Don't know how Rob Brzezinski does it
When you see the details, its very much a cap friendly deal. He could have made more $$$ by waiting, no doubt about that. Nice work by the Vikings....again. Pretty obvious Hunter likes it in Minnesota. Hunter could get another huge payday at only 28 years old when this contract expires.
72 million over 5 years
40 million guaranteed
15 million signing bonus
thats all we know for now.

It sure looks that way... the average salary per year is slightly less than Everson's recent extension. Hunter could have easily reset the DE market if he hit FA next year, but this doesn't even put him in the top 5 for 4-3 DEs in the NFL.
Looks like a great deal for the Vikings in terms of the cap implications, but also for Hunter since he got a boatload of guaranteed money...

Wow - much higher than I expected. Hope he earns it.

What were you expecting exactly? Its a top 10 DE contract and certainly could have been higher. No DE that has entered the league since 2015 has more sacks than Hunter.
Just win it all this year and I dont care if Hunter (or anyone) ever plays well for the Vikings again. At this point, we would all just take one.

It's slightly less than Everson's extension from last year in terms of average salary per year, but Hunter received more guaranteed money. I call that a win considering Everson is older and is already on his 2nd extension, while Hunter is what... 24 years old and just entering his prime? This deal doesn't even get Hunter into the top 5 salaries for DEs in the NFL... he could have easily reset the DE market if he was able to hit free agency after this season.

Just suprised he already is valued that high. I like him, but I don't think he's considered one of the best DEs in the league. In three seasons he's had one with double digit sacks (12.5). He was down to 7 last season, and seemed to disappear after Griff hurt his foot. That's why I said I hope he earns it. I don't think last season was his best season so far in his young career.

and...and we dont know the exact layout of the deal... this could be an extension that raises his base this year a little and then brings down the next 4 years to a manageable number with the 5th year being a throw away all together?

Contracts are never really about what you've done as much as what you're expected to do. And the expectations for Hunter as a 23-year-old pass rusher who works his ass off...are enormous.

Don't look just at sacks but pressures too. He is up there on that front and last year was his first starting and he played something like 78% of the snaps. He is proven IMO already and at age 23 has a TON of upside. He would probably get a lot more waiting a year.

Looking strictly at 4-3 base ends he is a top 10 player talent/production wise and has the upside to be the best in the NFL. That warrants a top contract. He'd get $16M+ as a UFA

so have you heard the structure of the extension yet? how much is real money per year and how much is make believe?
This is awesome news, really glad this is the first one they got out of the way. Definitely don't think they overpaid him at all.
I'm expecting Diggs to be next in line.
This was a brilliant signing...he easily could have made far more in the market...with two players left to go we really only need to sign one and if we want to, tag the other...

He could be the most important out of the 3 if he is a stud this year.
