Hard to accurately explain how much harder it is for guys with long arms to bench than for shorter armed guys. Linval has LONG arms and is a beast strength wise. What he does on the bench is crazy.

I can't see it real well, is that 4 plates or 5?  Looks like 405 to me.

Pretty sure he's putting up 405 there,  bounced it a bit,  but I am not going to tell him it doesn't count.

And yes...long arms and benching is a biotch .

Look at the left set of plates, its hard to see but there are 5.  Unless they have one thick ass 45 and a bunch of normal ones.  I'd be kind of surprised if it took that much effort to move 405, long arms or not.  Then again, who knows how far into a work out he is here.  I will say I loathe that form with a fiery passion. Especially when you look back a few years ago to Jet hurting his back in the weight room.  Jeez, wonder why.

Watching him arch his back like that makes me cringe. Screwed me up good.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, lot of effort to push up 405.  For a guy his size, that should not be a big problem.  That's why I thought there may be a plate in there that I can't see.

Blow up the clip and you will see it is just 4 plates, not 5, but one of them must be a 100 pound plate.

There’s 2 - 45’s and a 100 on each so thats 425. 430 if you want to count the collars I suppose.

As far as the amount of weight and doing one rep, we don’t know where he is at in his workout. Is he just finishing up? Could definately be the case.

On another note, free bench at 425lbs is no slouch. 405lbs was the most I ever did and even though I could do 5-6 reps on a good day, I never went more due to the strain it put on my wrists and Shoulders. Even as big as he is, they are so many small components of areas like the shoulder it just isnt worth it to push it too far unless yoi’re a competitive power lifter. They make shirts and wraps etc to do more but especially the shirts give a huge advantage to inflate numbers. For him or a regular person there’s no reason to care about such things. It’s all about functional strength and most importantly to football - stamina.

Good insight Havoc.

Man, I'm not a competitive weight lifter or anything like that, but I do workout at the gym. I'm 52 and I notice I've really got to be careful with free weights. I do more stationary type stuff now that is controlled as I'm not trying to be Mr. Universe and its easy to get an injury with free weights. I'm on glucosamine because my shoulders and the tips of my elbows were aching so bad at night after pushing weight....it completely helped. Its hell getting old! I also use the sitting stationary bench press and its a ton easier on my body.

Agree. At a certain age, free weights just don't make sense anymore. The potential harm you can do is far greater than whatever benefit you might get over a machine. I learned to lift playing football, and for 20 years I did the whole "power" thing. Low reps, heavy weight. It's all I knew. I met a guy in the gym about 10 years ago who was probably in the best muscular shape I'd ever seen. He was doing high reps with much lighter weight. I asked him what was up and he asked me if I was still a football player. No. Then why the hell am I still lifting like one? I changed that day. Best thing I ever did for my back, knees, etc.
