Vikings rookie CB Mike Hughes caps strong spring with pick six
Mike Hughes returned an interception 57 yards for a touchdown last year with Central Florida. During practice with the Vikings on Thursday, he had one even longer.
Taken by the Vikings with the No. 30 pick in April’s draft, Hughes caught a ball that bounced off tight end Josiah Price and rambled down the field to the end zone on the final day of minicamp.
Hughes shrugged off the play. Still, it was a good way to cap off what was a strong spring for the rookie.

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!
Zimmer recently praised Hughes on his KFAN interview as being the quickest learner on inside coverages he's ever been around... High praise for the young rookie.
It would appear early that Hughes has real upside to play the slot. If Holton Hill continues to show ability (long way to go) and makes the roster, its very possible that Trae Waynes won't be resigned by the Vikings. Long way to go yet obviously and its far from a guarantee, but its an obvious path if those things fall into line. Minnesota has several talented young players they need to sign.
Have you seen Hughes? The kid is built.
I was pissed as hell we drafted a DB @ 30 this past draft given other needs on the team. But this kid might be a real diamond and you can never have enough good DB's.
And to another posters point, remember when just getting off the field on 3rd down was a win? Now I'm starting to take for granted the #1 D in the league.
Shame, shame, shame on me...
If highs is the Dimond and hill a ruby so to say then losing Waynes would be doable even though I feel he is a rising star but dam corners even average ones make bank in free agency so maybe losing a rising young cb but drafting his replacement allows the Vikings to keep Diggs or hunter so be it

Hughes will be mainly used as the nickel corner with Rhodes and Waynes on the outsides. Basically the secondary needs all 3 to cover other teams top wide receivers.

I was with you. Kinda said to myself...that's a Zimmer pick. If he is the best player available(on their board)at that point. Then take him and be happy you got him. I really hope he plays this year and plays well.
we keep saying we cant resign them all... well the best way to stay competitive while losing start players to free agency is to draft more studs. Sounds like they are planning for life without Waynes or possibly... (gulp) Rhodes? Letting Waynes walk turns a first rounder into a 3rd round compensatory pick... trading Rhodes at the height of his game under a decent contract may net an early second or even a late first rounder. I think a lot depends on how the rest of the corners round out this year, I dont see Zim running without 2 studs and 2 quality back ups.

That's how I felt at the time. I of course wanted a mammoth lineman or something, but I still shiver when I think of our secondary from the 20 years previous. 99? 2000? Wasswa Serwanga and Robert Tate? Never again.
I don't see the Vikings trading Rhoads anytime soon
In year 2020. Top 4 CBs-Rhodes, Hughes, Hill, Alexander (or another top draft pick)
@"Viking1987" said: I don't see the Vikings trading Rhoads anytime soonI dont either, but... at the end of the year, with those new contracts to take on.... if they decide that CB is the position of strength to take from, there could be an arguement made if Waynes continues to make strides this year. He is after all 2 year younger, and like I said, Rhodes would net the bigger return.
@"JimmyinSD" said:True but if Waynes plays above last year's play he will be commanding a contract worth more money Tha Rhoads if not the Vikings someone else will pay that based on the that so many teams need good cb@"Viking1987" said: I don't see the Vikings trading Rhoads anytime soon I dont either, but... at the end of the year, with those new contracts to take on.... if they decide that CB is the position of strength to take from, there could be an arguement made if Waynes continues to make strides this year. I'm just happy that our first rounder sounds like he'll be seeing the field sooner rather than later. Our secondary this season should be ELITE if all our guys stay healthy and play to their potential.
We can worry about what to do next season when it comes. We'll still have Rhodes, Waynes, Hughes, and Alexander under contract. No need to worry about trading or releasing guys until after the 2019 season.

Yes, it was just in response to 87 saying we could lose Waynes. I think the kid really stepped his game up nicely last year and since he doesnt already have the name that Rhodes had made for himself before his new deal I think its possible that keeping Waynes is the better move for the future. A lot of variable left to play out this year though before we have to worry about any of it.
Planning for Waynes' departure? I think Mac Alexander is the guy we lose first. But both are under contract for 2018 and 2019, so let's see what happens.
Not to jinx us, but look at how the Seahawks were loaded with young defensive talent about 3 years ago...seemingly long ago. Odds are, someone on our defense is likely to suffer a career-impacting injury...someone is going to get full of themselves and insist on leaving via unrestricted free agency... We can't predict who, just be glad if we seem to have extra bodies in any area.
