CB Mike Hughes to the Vikings at #30
I get the sense more than a few of you wanted that pick to be an offensive lineman... LOL
There are still quite a few good offensive line prospects hanging out there... James Daniels, Will Hernandez, Connor Williams, Tyrell Crosby, Austin Corbett, Brian O'Neill, Braden Smith, etc...
We were a bit short on CBs in the playoffs when Rhodes got dinged up, and Newman has lost a step or two. This pick could push Mac along too, and be a future replacement for Sherels as a returner. I think Zim knows that DB depth is important. I have no problem with taking a CB in the 1st. I just hope it works out.

We will find out in 3 years....
Hernandez or Daniels, could have stepped right in.

yup
Lots of angst over this pick which is understandable when you really wanted an offensive lineman. It explains the bias.
Hughes joined the UCF team Aug 17th. He started two weeks later. He is a former QB and is very intelligent which helped him to pick up the defense at UCF in just two weeks. That is impressive.
Mocks do NOT represent rankings. He is consistently in the top 5 of CBs at almost every site.

I could go on but that is enough to illuminate the ridiculous notion that mocks represent where teams have players ranked.
As to who he faced in college.
They played Memphis twice who have a nice WR named Anthony Miller. Miller had 3 catches for 37 yards the first game and then had 14 catches for 195 yards and 3 TDs the second game. The majority of that was on a different corner. Memphis was smart to line Miller up over the opposite corner almost all of the time. He did catch one 15 to 18 yard TD on Hughes.
They played Maryland once and DJ Moore lined up against the opposite corner the majority of the time too. He finished with 8 catches for 83 yards and 1 TD.
They played SMU once and I did not see any highlights of that game. He finished with 5 catches for 46 yards.
Their conference may not be that great but there are receivers from that conference that are going to get drafted ahead of other conferences like the SEC.
The fact that these teams purposely lined up their best WR over someone else is revealing. To me.
It must be in Zim’s contract that he gets spend the first round pick on a reach to prove that he can coach them into a star.
Did we really just spend a first rounder to replace Sherels?
UPDATE: I'm off the ledge!
I have a theory. Came to me late last night.
Are we as fans just not used to the Vikings being this good?
Most year's we pick in that 15-25 range and we get a good player plus we fill a position of need. It's great. This year would've been OL for sure if we were picking at 20.
And every year one of the "good teams" drafting between 28-32 lands some defensive stud who slipped. And I stare at the TV and think, must be nice-- the rich get richer.
That team is us now! Whether you think Hughes is a "stud" or not, the rich definitely got richer in our secondary.
I guess let's enjoy it, do a rain dance, eat our vitamins and say our prayers that we land a solid O-lineman tonight. If there's another big run on lineman and we have to trade up to get one then please disregard this entire glass half full post and meet me at the cliff.

We passed on Hernandez too. He was my last rookie starter at OL. The rest of the OL prospects are more projects. Even Daniels may need a year. At this point, it may make little difference if we draft an OL in the 2nd or 3rd round.
Strange. Obviously, the team feels they have the talent needed at OL. Is Isadora that good?
Hmmm. How is it that Minnesota landed a Starter on the O-Line last year in the 3rd Round in a class that was not as deep as this one, which apparently won't produce any starters after Round 1 despite that depth?
Minnesota Miracle?

Good point... and I would also add that I wouldn't be surprised if Danny Isidora wins a starting job at RG this year. Zimmer and the coaching staff had some good things to say about him last training camp. Fans sure seem to forget about him.
Let's face it, there are still plenty of good interior OL and a couple solid OT prospects hanging out there. Add in the fact that there are some really good RBs and defenders still on the board and it wouldn't shock me at all if we have our pick of a good OG or OT at 62.

Ok I'll play Beavers 4th Clemmings 4th Yankey 5th these are the highest picks since Kahlil in 2012...5 dbs in 4 yrs in 1st 2 rds in comparison. And now our 84 mill QB gets the same shit show from last years average at best OL! I would have been thrilled to take 2 OL in the 1st 3 rds. I've been watching this circus routine at OL too fucking long! Build both lines...the iggles killed on on both.

Weaker interior draft classes. Who would you have reached for? Williams coming off a season so poor he went from top 15 lock to out of the first?Hernandez, who can pull but absolutely not at the same level as Reiff, Easton, Elf or Remmers?
Daniels? Went from #1 ranked Center to being the third one drafted IF he doesn't get passed by anyone else. I trust the collective wisdom of the GM crowd on this one. Gut tells me they think he needs to get stronger.
Those guys are still good prospects, I want to be clear about that. They just aren't as good as Price, Ragnow and Wynn who were all gone through no fault of Rick's.
And more importantly, they're all still available. Along with my favorite kid Crosby. And Corbett. And Brown. And Okorafor. And Smith.
Yeesh! That's a lot of kids! And some will still be available in the 3rd. Which is exactly where they got Elf in a weaker class. How'd that turn out?

But, but, but... the Vikings were supposed to fill their biggest need with that 1st round pick!!!
:-D

And we might trade up for one of them...
I think so many of us were expecting a off linemen pick that initially there was a lot of two was this at the hugh pick but he is one of the better CB in the draft worthy of being a 1st round pick I like the pic but would have rather gone off line
