Mine started last Saturday in the middle of that shit...needless to say there was no turkey hunting.

After a mostly open but bitterly cold winter we have been getting hit with a winter storm/blizzard about every 5 days for the last month with it being just warm enough in between to make enough melt to make everything muddy and sloppy.  Still frost in the ground so nothing is greening up or draining,  and shit loads of heavy wet snow drifted up everywhere.  We can typically go a few years without getting hit with a blizzard with east winds and we've had nothing but storms with east winds the last month.

Went from thinking field work by late march to maybe early may now.

2 weeks from moving the camper back to the lake and there's still 30+ inches of ice on the lake and 30+ inches of snow everywhere.    This is going to make for a very late spring and a very very long summer.

Yeah, my dad and I were in SD two weeks ago turkey hunting.  We got our turkeys, but it snowed a few inches the day before and it was COLD.  15 degrees the morning we hunted...

Good luck if/when you get out!

Won't it make the summer short, or should I say shorter than normal?

no,  everything I would usually do in March and April,  now has to get crammed into May.... May into early June and then all summer I will deal with the shit that got half assed this spring or maintenance that didnt get done because there wasnt time.   Not to mention zero down time.... makes for a damn long summer of work.  honestly I am not sure why a guy that is in the construction industry in SD would have an ag related hobby.... guess Im just not to bright.

I work as a private ag consultant and I am looking forward to a shorter summer. The last 3 in a row were like working overtime a few months and not getting paid for it.

I would think you would still have the same amount of work,  just less days to do it in,  thus  longer hours in a day and working more weekends and holidays.  That's what I call a longer summer,  technically it will still be the same amount of days. :p

With another 6-7 inches yesterday, my farming is WAY behind.  2 years ago we were planting corn already.  The 25th has been my average start date for the last 20 years.  It'll be at least 2-3 weeks before we can even think about starting this year.  We can get the crop in in a hurry, but we will be pushing the envelope of not losing yield to the shorter season.  I can feel the stress level of the year already creeping up on me.

My big push will be late may and june rather than april may and june. I prefer it all crammed into a short window for a change). We will be in the fields in 2 weeks so not so bad for us up north.

First 5 spring goats were kidded 10-14 days ago.  The rest seem to be waiting for real spring before they come out.  I can't blame them.  I've been called twice about honey bee pickup and I had to restrain myself from asking, "Are you nuts?"
